M70 7mm STW

Not sure about bullets, but I have my eye on the 180gr Berger. Would anyone know the factory twist on the M70? Scope option could be a 6-24x 4200 :)

I think the Winchesters in the 7mm were 1-9.25 or 9.50.. Either way, I bet you would do okay with the 180 Bergers. Those are some sleek pills, that is for certain. Sounds like you are wanting to stretch it some! I think you ought to be able to get it done!

Jake, that does sound like a rough go of it buddy!

Another rifle set up for some long shooting...

I've worked up loads on quite a few 7STWs. Most opted to go with the 160 AccuBond; no one has complained that they couldn't stretch its legs.

DrMike,

I have some 160 AB, what would a good powder be to start with and did you find they liked the bullet seated out or should I start at factory OAL?

H1000 is my "go to" powder for the 7STW. Because I often work with Model 700s, it means that I'm pretty well confined to SAAMI specs for OAL. The last one I worked on was in a Model 70. Despite having room to seat out, because of time pressures, I worked with the 3.600 OAL RL22 and RL19 have each worked well in almost every rifle I've worked up.

I've ran 160's at 3340 fps from my stw with 95 gr of wc872, other than that H-1000 and Retumbo are my go to powders in the STW

I think this rifle will be coming down in price soon. It is about to end, and never got above 250.00. Seems like he may be lowering the price some if he wants to sell it.

What do you all think it is worth? 800.00?

$750-800. He's been having a really tough time selling stuff. I don't think he has a clue on what he's got or the going rate on them. He's got that 7-08 FW SS that I want bad came off yesterday at $739 but didn't clear his reserve. It's now @ $752. It's been on there for the better part of a month 6 weeks maybe. I can get that same rifle in .270 or 06 for $700 perfect for another project!! Maybe a 6.5 of some sort. I can get a blued one at will for around $650-700.

I wonder if someone were to offer him $750 if he would take it. That is a great cartridge and in a rifle I could really enjoy.

Not sure Mike, while the 7STW in a Model 70 is a kinda rare bird, it isn't worth what he is thinking, at least not to my thoughts. I am kinda thinking the same thing happened with the M70 300 RUM Brian just picked up. It was the 2nd or 3rd time he listed it, and it was finally let go of when he figured out what people would pay. Hopefully this 7STW gets down a little.

Your right though, already having a 7WSM, 7RM and 7X57, I can't see it slowing me down wanting the STW either, especially in that rifle. It does look pretty nice.

That would be something as well.

I have seen the Stainless 358 Norma, but it is in a price range that puts it out my range!

Ah well, I imagine I can put together a similar rifle for much less.. The RUM's and STW's are bringing good money it seems...

People get pretty optimistic about prices for their rifles. Owners can ask anything they want, but it doesn't mean they are anywhere near reality.

Please oh please don't let me make a road trip to Eastern Oregon!

That's how my STW started out.
With NBT's it would shoot 1/2" groups out of the box.
"The Long Shooter" has morphed into something totally different now, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

That load is smokin' fast. It is a laser beam for sure.
The load I found for 7mm RUM was 3318 fps. Really not much difference between the two.

I know I would be in for a Model 70 STW should one come across for a normal Sporter price. Or a new SC made one.

Because of the rarity of the chambering, they can ask that price. The wood has some nice figuring in it. I've got some good loads that work well in the 7STWs I've shot. I just finished a load with 160 ABs and H1000 that was very good.
