The 2010 MI Muzzle Loader season opened Friday 12/3 and with colder temperatures and limited hunting pressure, the deer were on the move. Friday evening I saw 9 does and watched them as they pawed through the snow for acorns. Saturday weather was cold and windy and I only saw 3 does. I went out Sunday afternoon with high hopes of a buck cruising down my ridge and sure enough, a buck came in right towards the end of legal shooting time. I recognized him as a scrapper buck, a nice little 8 pt that broke off one horn right at the hair line that I passed during the bow season.
I was hunting with my T/C Omega 50 cal loaded with 120 grs Hodgdons 777 loose powder and the new Nosler .458 cal 300 gr BST bullet loaded into a MMP (orange) sabot. I am guessing the MV to be 1800 fps.
The cross hairs of the Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36mm scope found the spot and I sent the big slug on its way. As the smoked cleared, I could see that the buck had dropped at the shot. The bullet hit him high in the shoulder and exited behind the off shoulder taking out both lungs and the top of the heart. The internal trauma was impressive and the exit wound was the size of a quarter.
This is the second deer I have taken with this bullet this year and the results are impressive.
Nosler's .458 cal 300 gr BST is a keeper.
