New 35 Whelen :)

I was able to get out today and shoot at 300 yards to see what kind of bullet drop the 200 gr AccuBond would have at that range. The 200 gr AB was loaded with 61 and 61.5 gr Varget to see which would perform better and the clear winner was 61 gr with a speed of 2810 fps. My first 3 shot group was a nice triangle that measured 2.35" the second group unfortunately had a flier that opened it up to 3.4", considering there were some heavy gusts of wind to try and shoot around I'm pretty happy with the results and am going to load a bunch of this load for hunting pretty soon. The gun is zeroed now for this load and there was an 8 1/2" drop @ 300 when sighted in for 200 yards. I'm going to try and get out one more time and use once fired brass @ 300 just to make sure there are no surprises in the future, will report the results when it happens. Next time out I'm going to use a bigger target too a 4" dot was pretty much covered by the crosshairs of my 6x36 scope.

Beautifull shooting Gerry - nice grouping  - that load shoots pretty flat for a 35 cal It will get the job done !

Cheers RJ

That load is coming along nicely, Gerry. I do believe it will work very well.

Great shooting Gerry. That right there seems like a great load buddy. I am very excited to see your results with that load.

Time to update this thread, I weighed the gun on a proper kitchen scale and it weighs 7.4 lbs minus ammo and sling, exactly what I was hoping for. Went out today and revisited the 200 gr AccuBond with IMR 8208 load I worked with last fall. I changed two things from last year, switched from Remington 9 1/2 M primers to CCI 250's and seated the bullets deeper going from 3.440" to a new depth of 3.400" Things went very nicely, after seeing the results of some of you guys tweaking the seating depth of AccuBond bullets I had to try it. If I can even remotely duplicate the 57 gr load it will be the one.... Just need the 250 Speer's to get here to test out :)

Man, that will stimulate me to get on the ball, Gerry. That is a fine load. The rifle is performing very well.

Wow, that is excellent Gerry. It does seem the AB's like some more jump to the rifling than what I once thought! CCI250's are what I use for the Whelen as well. Not sure if they are really needed, but I can't see where they have ever hurt anything either!

Looks pretty awesome right there. That is a great looking load for sure.

Pretty happy with the gun and the 200 gr AccuBond looks to be an accurate bullet. Spring black bears beware 8)

It does go against what I have believed before thankfully there are those here who have showed us new ways of doing things. IMR 8208 is nice to use with 200's since there was no compresion of the powder like there was with Varget which gives more room to tweak the load. I am saving the CCI 200's for my 260 Rem and 303 British, the CCI 250's have performed well in the past with the old Whelen and can't see a downside since the accuracy is good.

gerry - its SHooting Good ! Very nice grouping ! I am surprised at the overall weight with that FAT #4 barrel on it - but GREAT !
What about a heavier 225 gr bullet though - have you shot any 225 gr Accubonds - if so what the results ? I think the 225 grer would be a better around compromise bullet weight in the 35 cal but that's JMHO !

Cheers RJ

RJ, my first try with the 225 gr AccuBond didn't go so well and I agree the 225 gr bullets are a great all around bullets, deer-grizzly easily. I'm going to do some more work with both the 225 gr Partitions and Accubonds this summer. The 250 gr Speer is next, you know me I love developing all sorts of loads and having lots of good ones to choose from for different purposes. There are better moose bullets than the 200 gr AccuBond but it would surely work well if I do my part, I see this load more for animals from cow elk and caribou on down and be a real hammer on goats and black bears around here :)

Gerry, 58-60 grains of RL15 will get you in the ballpark buddy. Very accurate and the speed is excellent as well. Those CCI250's seem to work well with the 250's as well.

I love the 250's in the Whelen. It runs very close to the 338 Win Mag, with a few grains less powder. Can't wait till you tune up those Speers!

Ok i thought you had tried them -but did not remember ( CRAFT diease ) I guess a good flat shooting 200 gr load and a 250 grer for the big tuff stuff and your covered then ! LOL RJ

I might have to try it but still have some other powders to try and still want to try the 225 gr Partition with Varget. The thing that bugs me about RL 15 is the big variations in different lots, that's why I gave up on it and tried Varget in my old gun. I wonder what the equivalent Norma powder would be? I can't wait to try the 250 gr Speer's either :)

RJ, they worked great in the old gun, so you are partly right :)

Gerry that load you have for 200gr is a tack driver:). I will be recording that for my 200 gr. test this spring. Very nice groups

Blessings,
Dan
