New Bird Dog

Year old male. Good guy, but he's a rescue dog with some issues. We made a lot of progress today on "trust"

Hoping that he'll be able to hunt with me a bit later this fall. He's supposed to be a liver-colored German Wirehaired Pointer, but I'm kinda wondering if he's actually a pudelpointer. Beats me. He's birdy as all get out and full of energy.

Pretty sweet dog too. But... A few issues to work through. Training is going to be daily for a while.

He hasn't had any hunt training yet. Working on basic obedience. Setting the ground rules.

Once we've got that all figured out, then I'll start in with some hunt training. He's already pointing birds in my yard!

This morning he parked himself in another room, and kinda kept track of me.

This afternoon he took a nap with his paws and head on my chest.

We made some progress today.

Got off the phone with the GWP Rescue Association a bit ago. They say that he and his brother are both GWP's, this one just has an uncharacteristic short coat.

Got a few photos this afternoon, following his nap. Gotta time these things ya know:

Field is a long ways off. We need basic training here. Hunting/Field in due time. I hope to hunt with him this fall/winter... But who knows?

There are some varieties with GWPs.
Just recently saw one that looked similar - she had the beard, but the coat of a shorthair pointer.
Well, some of the German pointers go back to the same parents, so no surprise there.

Afterthought: will you use him on bloodtrails, too?
They are no specialists, but they are used for trailing over here quite a lot. Not as patient as bloodhounds, but they can do the job. Actually, they have to pass such a test to be considered fit for hunting.
Heck, we tested my girlfriend's 4 year old Jack Russell and she did a decent job. Drew a deer leg over 150y with three 90° bends and she followed as if on tracks, though it was the first deer leg she ever smelled.
Will test her on a real bloodtrail next occasion.

Sadly, can't legally use the dog on blood trails here in Washington. I don't think so anyway. Not allowed to use dogs in any way to hunt deer, elk, bear, cougar, whatever... Only birds.

Took the little rascal on a rugged 3.5 mile hike today, gained about 930' elevation. Wore him out!

My 28 year old son and I just walked the pup farther than I think he's ever walked. My goodness did he get excited about all the scents, sights and sounds! He even pointed a butterfly for me. Gotta love that.

He's exhausted, sleeping at my feet now.

Personally,I think it is a shame to loose and animal that a dog would have found - but if it's the law....

Congratulations Guy, that is a handsome looking Pup. I know you well enough to be able to say that this Pup could not have been adopted into a better family :wink: .
I am sure you will have working well this fall and those pheasant are going to catch heck :mrgreen:.

Ya, eager to please for sure.

I haven't fired a round near him yet. Will wait till he's super busy with something fun, then shoot a 22 short from my Marlin 39A. We're having fun, learning some obedience. Time for hunt training later.
