New Featherweight

There are a few 6.5-06s floating around here. It is a fine round. Most of the boys shooting that cartridge find that they get better case life and better accuracy as they throttle back from maximum loads, it seems. I don't believe the 264 WM is any harder on a barrel than any other cartridge. The problem is that people fail to recongise that they are expending a lot of powder to push a projectile down a relatively small orifice. There will be significant throat erosion very quickly if they try to shoot hot and fail to keep the bore clean. I generally advise that any bore smaller than 28 calibre be maintain more scrupulously, especially if the powder charge routinely exceeds 70 grains. I have witnessed severe and rapid erosion of the barrels of such cartridges as 257 STW, 243 WSSM and 223 WSSM, and even 7.21 Tomahawks and 7.21 Firebirds.

I run a 6.5/06 Imp in a bench gun and I run it hard.. If I was to do it all over again I am not so sure I would. Ballistically, it stands tall, but at the expense of barrel steel. For a 600yd target gun, I would do a 6.5x47L, for beyond I would look to the sevens.. But no matter how you look at it, there are trade offs. For a deer hunting rifle, it would likely outlast you (barrel). Match shooting = 1 season..

It will be interesting this yr to see what happens in my barrels. I recut the chambers on both 6.5/06 imp barrels so I am starting with a fresh chamber and throat.. Prior, I had borescoped both and was shocked, we'll see how long they hang in there this yr...

But then again, you dont buy a vette to just go to the Dairy Queen...

I think I'd call it a 264wsm.
That sounds nice!!! and reminiscent of the old king of 6.5's!

I think the proper term would be 6.5-300wsm...... but no matter what parent wsm case you started with, they'd all come out the same after sizing. The 270wsm being the best and easiest choice. The 7wsm has a different front end to keep it from being fired in a 270wsm, but I think it would size correctly for a 6.5-

I am kinda waiting to see how Joels 6.5WSM turns out. Since it is so close to the 270WSM, I am kinda thinking of something else in 6.5. Either way, I bet it will be a screamer! My 270 will push 140's into the 3250 range pretty easily. I imagine the 6.5 will be about as good and have slicker bullets. Scotty
