new stock comin' ...

BK- How do you like the McMillan A-3. I'm looking at going down that road with my 7 STW. What does it weigh? do they fit good in the field, or just on the bench? Whats your thought on the A-3 for a heavy (10-12 lbs) LR hunting rifle? I just can't decide between red, grey and black, or blue, grey, and black. My wife is a huge fan or your purple stocks. She wants me to restock her (mine  ) 280 AI with something purple because of you! I must admit, they do look good.

Woodycreek- Whats your thoughts on the B&C A-5 for a heavy hunting rifle? How does that flat forend work out for you. I have been eyeballing one for a while, but the only thing that has been turning me off about it was the flat forend. Whats your thoughts?

Kodiak- I have two McMillans, and a B&C medalist light weight sporter. I really like all of them, but I find the McMillans to seem a bit stiffer. They all required bedding. I do like the B&C stocks for a budget build (my 270 WSM project), but like Guy Miner said about the McMillan, you can get it any way you like it. Size, shape, upsidedown handed even. They build them however you tell them to, and I believe they have a lifetime warrenty. You might want to look into that, I might be making things up  The only down side is waiting so long to get one, and they do cost a good bit more. A guy can find a sale now and then and save yoru self some $ as well.

Good luck!

Have yet to shoot it since I got the new stock. I can say it looks and feels good  Don't think the forend should be that big of a deal. It should ride the shooting bags real well. Lots of adjustment for LOP and cheekpiece. I have used Scotty's 338 Win mag with the Medalist at the range and hunting. I REALLY like that stock!

Those Mickey stocks are nice....I'm just not confident enough in my manhood to get one. Guess I'll have to stick with wood

I just got my 'real' A3, but I've had an A3 Sporter, but I've only shot it off the bench. I have a 26" Remington Varmint contour barrel in it, and I'm starting to think that if I were going to hunt it hard in the field, and wanted it to balance a little better (it's a little nose heavy) I would order sniper fill rather than standard fill like I have. I don't know what you're planning barrel wise, but I think i would try to go a little lighter contour than a Varmint tube. I assume you are going somewhere between 26-28", maybe fluted. One other thing... If you have big/long hands, you can have McMillan slide the barreled action forward in the stock, so that the reach to the trigger from the pistol grip fits better.

Purple rules!

Jim asked me earlier in the month for a pic of my STW. Hopefully it is attached

Bill,

That's a good looking rifle that is only made more attractive when it shoots well. It does look like business.

NIce looking stock, plus Bill, are finally getting some good groups from that 7mm STW rifle. That is the bottom line.

Like everyone I also like the looks of a well figured wood stock, but I also believe that functional is also beautiful in its own right. This one has pretty clean lines. I have already picked up a scratch, how I don't know but will touch it up soon. I am really hoping that I do have continued consistency. I have refined the reloads this last month and I am sure that the new stock has helped. I also tried (and failed) last night to post target pictures, will try again this evening.

Bill,

As the old adage states, "Pretty is as pretty does." I love wood, and preferentially gravitate to wood stocks. However, in terms of accuracy, there is little question but that synthetic stocks are more likely going to provide the stable platform necessary for consistent accuracy. I do compromise on occasion and purchase laminate stocked rifles. Nevertheless, if I were spending more time in the weather today, I'd be carrying synthetic stocked rifles.
