Ok, I did it. I caved to all the enabler pressure and got one.

I'm the newest member of the Whelen Owners Association.

My wife and I went to Cabela's today on a day trip for my birthday and while there I found a Remington 700 BDL in .35 Whelen that had been installed in a Bell & Carlson stock. No scope, just some mickey mouse see thru mounts on top of some Weaver style bases. Anyway, the price was right and I got it. When I got home I checked the manufacturing codes and found it was made in August of 1976.

I had been resisting the subtle subliminal messages Dr. Mike, Scotty, and others have been posting here and my therapist thought I was making progess, but this was just too much. I was imagining the effect some 225 gr. Accubonds would have on the whitetail population this fall and........well, the rest is history (except on my credit card statement!).

Anyway, now I need some dies and time to make some range ammo!

Congrats on that buy! I bet that rifle is going to be a stunner! That sounds like a NICE Remington! Man, get yourself some RL15 and hang on! Let us know when you need loads. Man, I don't think you will be let down. Happy Birthday to YOU!

Don't forget a picture of the mighty Whelen when you get a chance! Whelen Owners Assosciation! I love it! Great call on that. I might have to add that to my signature line! Scotty

Ron,

That'll be a sweet complement to the .358. Trust you had a delightful birthday, and it is obvious that you did.

Any rifle is a good purchase, congratulations! Scotty is beaming with pride and I think you can also count yourself as one of the group members of RADD or Rifle Addiction Deficit Disorder! We have our on-line meetings the first Tuesday of the month and Scotty is the VP and Dr. Mike the president!

Thanks guys. I have to correct one small item, though.

I did further research and determined Remington didn't chamber the .35 until 1988 so I re-checked the manufacturing codes and found out I screwed up, it is actually August of 1988 not 1976.

The rifle isn't pretty, it's black synthetic and has some honest hunting scars on it, but the bore is bright and shiny. Plus, black synthetic is my preference for hunting rifles anyway. Oh, I forgot to mention, my present only went for $440 so I thought for that price I'd take a chance. I figured a rifle of that era is before the quality control issues seemed to begin.

Dr. Mike, do we get membership cards and t-shirts, too?

Man, and that is a good spot to be! Heck I'm still waiting on you to step up to the mighty 338 or 35 David. Scotty

Ron,

Congratulations on your 35 Whelen, you are going to love it. It is a real hammer on game and puts WT deer down right now.

I have had my M700 Classic 35 Whelen since 1988 so I guess I am a senior member of WOA.

What? Huh? Eh? (There you go, answered in three languages). I believe David is the quartermaster. We'd better ask him where the stash is located. I don't even have a tee shirt, much less a membership card. Where's JD338? He needs to get in on this.

Congrats on what should prove to be a great rifle!

I remember when those .35 Whelen's were introduced by Remington, back in the good years... Couldn't afford one, but sure wanted one.

I think the whitetail population is going to take a dent...

Here she is, M700 Classic 35 Whelen with a Vari X III 2.5-8x36mm scope.
Shoots the 250 gr PT at a MV 2581 fps and well under MOA accuracy.

Yep, same, but a Burris Fullfield 2-7x, to be replaced by a Leupold VX III 2.5-8 or a VX3 with M1 elevation turret.

Congrats on the club membership, can't wait to join
I know that my 35 whelen is going to be a beaut!!

Blessings,
Dan

I remember when those Remington Classic .35 Whelen's were offered for sale. I bought my second .338 WM that year. Ron, that should be a great larger game rifle for you.

Thanks fellas. I'm gonna clean her up while I wait to get my ammo loaded cuz my job seems to think I have to be there if they're gonna pay me. Unreasonable , I know but.............

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had some favorite recipes using 225 gr. bullets they would be willing to share. I was figuring on using some Sierra's or Accubonds. In looking at Nosler's online data I was thinking about 58.0 of RL-15 over some Federal 210's. I also have some Hornady 200 gr FTX's I got for my 358. Anyone try them in a Whelen yet? I'm open to suggestions. These loads will be for whitetails out to 300 yds or so, maximum.

I noticed in Remington's catalog they advertised their ammo using magnum primers. I've normally only used magnum primers in magnum calibers but is there something I need to know that's different with the Whelen?

I'm computer illiterate  but I'm hoping to get some pictures taken and try to post them of some of my rifles and targets I shot recently.
