Just returned from a couple of hours of working with pistol shooters, at night! (y)

Most had done very little, or no, shooting in the dark. We shot with and without flashlights. Learned four different flashlight/gun positions. Did some shooting and moving. Did multiple shot drills.

Found out that it's tough to do mag changes and to clear malfunctions when both hands are already busy, one with a gun, the other with a flashlight.

Good stuff. I thoroughly enjoyed, and it seemed like everyone else did too.

Guy,

Sounds like a great exercise.
Its always best to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Good read Guy. When I was the instructor for our PD I also taught at night and the proper holding of the light. I really wasn't too impressed with the lights affixed to the gun, the reason being wherever you pointed the light the gun barrel was also facing.

We talked about that at the start of class last night BRM. A couple of the guys are pretty high-speed/low-drag competitive shooters, and of course had the obligatory weapons lights mounted.

They'd never understood that most of the time it's better to search with the light, and shoot with the gun.

I made the point by having one of the students sit in a car, simulated that he was being pulled over, walked up alongside the car like I was the patrol officer, and used my flashlight to look into the car and at him. Then asked the whole group if they would have preferred me to be looking into the car, pointing a Glock at them instead, because of the attached light...

EVERYBODY voted for the light alone, rather than the one with the .45 attached...

There is of course, a time and a place for weapons mounted lights. But not during the training we were doing last night.

Undoubtedly more to this training than meets the eye. Those not tasked with law enforcement would benefit from such training. Good read, Guy.
