Noah "Two Shot"

...rigs are like little boys, Dr. Mike, if they didn't wash off, nobody'd have 'em. I 'stretch' my grouse breasts by making 'Grouse Fried Rice'. Cut the breasts into strips, stir-fry w/ garlic & ginger, throw whatever's in the fridge, julienne carrots, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, etc. & brown, add rice (I like calrose) & chicken broth or water. Use the same amount of water (broth) as rice, makes it fluffy instead of sticky. Cover, simmer 20mins., fluffing a couple times while cooking. Works pretty good w/ venison, too, substitute beef broth for chicken, add a little teriyaki...

Congrats Noah on your fine marksmanship. Grouse are at the top of my list of favorite wild game. My mouth is now watering!

Yup! I've done that as well, Gene. I also make an apricot sauce with strips of grouse breasts that is very good. Generally, I would have sautéed some onions and root veggies. However, since I was baking a few spuds, I went the way I did. That is one of the wonderful things about grouse--the breasts adapta to about any meal. (y)

Well, the old man had to show the lad how to tag grouse this evening. I put myself out on a limb, casually saying, "This is how it is done." Always better to be lucky than good. One shot, one grouse. "See, son, don't give them a warning shot. Just drop 'em." Great to be adulated by the youth.

There you go but what if you had missed :?:

I would have calmly noted how that dead bird flew away. It isn't every day that the lad gets to see a miracle such as that. 8) Consequently, he breasted the bird and took it home to cook up for his mom.

I should have known better than to match wits with you but to deceive the poor innocent young boy like that should you have missed now really shame on you.

Mike,

It is nice to hear that you've finally stopped giving grouse "warning shots" too!

Only proves the old saying "that the apple doesn't fall from the tree". Glad to hear and see that Noah is having fun!

I noticed throughout this thread that you had failed to mention how many ruffies and sharptails this year had taken advantage of your first shot to escape to live another day! LOL

But to be fair, "Pa's" hands are not as steady as they once were and the head shot on a ruffie at 25+ yards is a small target, even if he is armed with a scoped 22. (Tis the reason that this trusty native guide has always aimed for the base of the neck = larger target area; with the addition that a head shot grouse will always flap around like crazy, putting the rest of the flock into flight, limiting one's ability to collect more than one out of a flock - not to mention that I was never blessed with a steady hand)

Hope we run across some ptarmigan on Wednesday when we go to Pink Mtn.

Leave that 28 gauge home and take your 10-22, Gil. We'll see how that works out. Remember, I've seen you shoot.

DrMike, seeing you and Gil banter makes me want to get back up there. I know that I have read scripture stating that the Dead shall rise but I wasn't sure it meant Ruffies !!
Are you going with Gil on Wednesday up on Pinks Mountain? If so enjoy yourselves & remember have Fun, Shoot straight and most of all be Safe.
Thinking of the mountains brings back some great memories  especially Gil giving me my new name ("Danny Whiteknuckles") (y)

Blessings,
Dan

Pink Mountain or Tommy Lakes--one or the other, Dan. Gil and I have seen lots of game up that way in years past and had some very entertaining hunts. Saw a nice young bull last evening in the cut block we hunted extensively during August. You and Gerry should have listened to the old man.
