Nosler .458 cal 300 gr BST

That sounds pretty deadly to me Jim. Pretty good speed out of them also. I hope you get to smash a bear with them. I think they will be a very good WT and Bear bullet, and at 15.00 for 50 for 2nds, they are very affordable. Scotty

Nice group! I will have to order some for loading my Marlin. I run them at about the same speed as you do for handloads with IMR 3031. Mine has the 22 inch barrel which does not make a great deal of difference with this cartridge.

Here are some 458 cal 300 gr BST recovered bullets, water jugs at 100 yds...
MV 1963 fps 5 jugs. weight is 277.0 grs and expanded to .806".

Good penetration and excellent expansion. Thanks for posting, JD. I'll be recommending these to people loading for the 45-70.

Awesome Jim. I would use it on a bear in a heartbeat!

Jim, if you keep posting things like this you are going to make me break down and buy a lever gun one of these days. That is one bad mammer jammer! Sounds like it shoots really well for you as well.

Jim, awesome pictures! You have just made me miss my 45-70 that much more! They look like WT and Black Bear dynamite. Awesome expansion and good weight retention. Can't wait to field test them!

Jake, get the lever gun! Like you , I have a ton of bolt guns, and they are fun, but the 45-70 GG is one awesome piece of gear! I never thought I would like the 45-70 this much, but I cannot wait to really hunt with it. Trust me, it is about the funnest gun you can own in it's price range! Mild to wild! Scotty

She is probably right about that. I know my wife would say the same thing also. Scotty

Between JD and Guy always chatting about their 45-70's, I could resist getting one. It was probably the most impulsive rifle buys I have done thus far! It is the best one I have in my opinion though. Very good cartridge, with so much ability it is unreal. You might not be able to smack game out at 500 with it, but with in 250 yards with proper bullets, it is a great rifle, and very portable. Scotty

Here is the first victim of the .458 cal 300 gr BST. Range was 60 yds.
Legally taken on private property doing damage to bird feeders.

Cool picture Jim! It looks like it will work for coons!! You should have backed up 150 yards, just to get some range on it!! You are probably the first guy with a 300gr BST kill. Scotty

Jim, buddy, I think you might need a bigger gun......Just a thought. Lucky you hit him just right. I hear those things have a whicked temper!

What can the 300gr BST do that the Hornady 325 Flex Tip can't? I'd much rather see Nosler re-introduce a 300gr Partition but I guess that's a dead issue at this point.

The BST is interesting but doesn't fill any available nitch.

I guess it compares to the other 300 grain bullets that available from Sierra, Hornady and Speer. By the tests Jim did, it looks like it expands well, has a great shape for a fat .458 bullet and is pretty accurate. I would think it fills in well for deer and black bear. Not sure about a niche, but it looks like a capable bullet for most who use the 45-70 and 450 Marlin, and it is reasonably priced for the average shooter. Scotty

Charlie,

Nosler has decided to keep the .458 300 gr PP in production!
