I loaded up some Nosler 62 grain Varmageddon (fast twist) for my tactical Mini 14. I shot this load a couple of weeks ago and then fired the last two rounds out of my Remington Model 788 in .223. Those two rounds printed a 1/4" group at 100 yards. The twist rate was 1X12" which I didn't believe was conducive for good groups from this bullet. On June 9, 2016 I fired my test loads out of the Remington 788 (original stock, 24" barrel, Timney trigger and Bushell 6X24 Mil Dot scope). They were loaded with Varget and CCI 400 primers. With a Varget load of 23.5 grains I shot a 3/8" group at 100 yards. At two hundred yards it printed a 7/8" group.

What amazed me was the accuracy of this bullet out of the Remington 788. The tactical Mini 14 (1X9 twist rate) only produced average groups.

The 788 always was a good shooting rifle but the 1-12" twist with that heavy bullet is probably at it's slowest twist to stabilize.

Welcome aboard. Good to see a new poster. That is some fine shooting. It will build confidence, for sure.

Could be a touch faster than 1-12 or your elevation makes it work. Either way, nothing to complain about there.

As far as I'm concerned the 788 has always been a good shooting rifle but the 1-12" twist with the heavy bullet. Maybe a faster tap of the 1-12 or your elevation makes it work.

Welcome to the forum.
The M788 is a shooter. Fast lock time definitely contributes. Your 223 is shooting great 👍

It’s intriguing that the tactical Mini 14 with a 1:9 twist rate didn’t match the accuracy of the Remington 788. This highlights how different rifles can behave quite differently with the same ammunition, possibly due to factors like barrel harmonics and overall build quality. contexto

60 gr Partitions and 62 gr Bonded bullets have performed sub moa in my 1 in 14" Ruger #1.

I think it is a very fine line. I have a Ruger M77 tang safety that my dad bought me for my 12th Christmas. I can comfortably shoot 60 grain Partitions with high success. Over the years I pushed the envelope a bit and tried 64 grain Nosler Bonded and they would keyhole at 25yards. I have not actually tried the 62 grain Varmageddon in that rifle, but am convinced 60 grains might be the top for 1-14". Good luck with your testing.
