Nosler Partition 150 gr. and Mag Pro in .270 Win

I have been very curious to try Mag Pro in my .270 Win. According to Accurate's load data, it can achieve 3,000 fps w/ a 150 gr. Sierra BT and an article I read claimed that same load chronographed "just over 3,000" in a 24" barrel and I think a 150 gr. NP was the bullet tested.

Does anyone have experience/information to share about Mag Pro in the .270 Win? It seems to do more for that chambering than any other, including the short mags it was supposedly designed for. It also seems to me that a Nosler Partition would be the ideal bullet to use with it. In fact, I have a very accurate Weatherby Vanguard (24") in .270 Win and if I can get it to launch a 150gr. NP at nearly 3,100 fps, I think I'll just call it a ".270 Weatherby".

I've not used MagPro in a 270 Win, but I have used it in a 280 Rem and in several WSMs. It seems to be an excellent powder for heavy for calibre bullets. I would certainly recommend trying it in your 270. A pound of powder is a cheap investment in the greater scheme of shooting.

Stewart, I've always had good luck with H4831 and 150gr NPT in the .270 Win. It's been one of our goto elk loads for 25+ years. If I was starting from scratch, the MagPro would be on my list of powders to try. Looks promising.

Accurate doesn't publish load data for the .280 but I would think it would be as beneficial in a .280 as it is in a .270, since they are very similar cases and bullet diameters (if not nearly identical). You could probably derive enough from the .270 load information to start working up a .280 load for 140 or 160 grain bullets. The capacities, case dimensions and neck-to-shoulder ratios of certain cartridges just lend themselves to ideal performance with certain powders. It seems that the new ideal powder for the .270 is now MagPro.

Remember, QuickLoad can only suggest loads. These are not pressure tested and you must workup carefully to ensure that they are safe in your rifle.

Dr. Mike, Thanks for the info. It agrees with the maximum load data Accurate publishes (which is comforting) and its helpful to have the OAL for the Nosler Partition. Probably the slight difference in muzzle velocity at 61.5 grains is the difference between a 22" and 24" barrel.

My go-to has been RL22 and G4831. Interesting option though. Please post results if you decide on its use.

I absolutely LOVE MAGPRO in my 270WSM. It is THE powder for that cartridge. My problem is finding it locally for sale. I hate to pay freight and hazmat on powders/primers. I will say that Magpro and 130gr Interbonds will go nearly 3400 from my rifle. I haven't been able to find Magpro for my 270WSM since I started shooting 150's, but I have no problem running 3150 or with 150gr BT's and PT's, using RL22 either, and the accuracy is excellent there as well.

Looking forward to seeing how Magpro works for you. It meters like water and throws really consistently. Man, now I need to find some for my 7WSM and see what it does with that. Scotty

I am really going to start looking into getting larger jugs of powder. I really use a bunch of RL22, Rl19 and RL15. I think Retumbo is going to be another I use a bunch of as well. Probably makes more sense to do it like that anyhow. Thanks for the heads up, that seems like a great price for MagPro. Might need to check it out. Scotty
