Nosler Partition Improvement?

While studying ACLS today, I allowed my mind to wonder...
Why not put one of those wonderful little plastic tips on the Nosler Partition?
And while we were at it, why not give the Partition a boat tail?

Time to get back to studying dysrythmias....
Oh UPS just showed up with my SPS package. The studying will have to wait a few minutes :twisted:
 
I don't know that little plastic tips or a boat tail would improve the Partition. Might as well use another great bullet, an AccuBond, if you need those.

However, there could be other improvements to the Partition. Weights often vary significantly more than other bullets. OAL also varies more than ABs. I wouldn't mind some standardization.

And I can often get ABs to shoot pretty effortlessly, but PTs tend for me to be finicky. I still prefer the PT, but if the shootability and standardization were better I wouldn't bother to shoot ABs!
 
The Partition bullet had a little chamfer boat tail for several years. Why not just put a Partition in the AccuBond and have one bullet? I am sure that there are performance issues with doing some of these things and there is really no point in fixing that which is not broken!
 
Run, i am not seeing the variations in the newer PT's that I saw with the originals. I have found variations in accuracy, but I have attributed that more to specific rifles, not necessarily the bullet itself. I am fortunate that my Win Mag likes them. I posted on another thread that I did retrieve one early this month. It weighed 125 gr, ( a 180), from a cow elk shot longwise at 340 yards. Lots of penetration. I am not sure a plastic thingy would be much improvement.
 
Yeah, I don't think the tip means much in BC, the whole nose would need streamlining. As far as a Boattail, I am pretty sure it would be pretty costly to do that with the way the rear lead core is inserted.

I can't say I haven't thought the same, but the plain old PT works so well it is hard to ask for more. Plus, their BC's in hunting weights used are pretty danged good actually, unless you are running them past the 600 yard mark..
 
I have only recoved one 130 gr, .270 Partition bullet, in 50 years, that went through 3-1/2 feet of pronghorn, including the pelvis and was lodged in the skin next to the anus. It looked just like the picture in the Nosler catalog.

I shoot Partitions in (5) rifles and they all deliver the accuracy and performance that I want, plus pentration. I agree with Bill on accuracy and would be reluctant to change the design, it has been refined over 60 years.
 
Do not worry . Nolser will be covering all your needs sooner or later.
 
I agree it would be a great addition to the line of bullets available. #1 reason I don't use the PT is lack of BC and they aren't as accurate as some of the other options out there in my rifles. Performance wise though I would love to use them if the above things were improved! The area's that I hunt offer some long shots so extended range performance is high on my priority list when choosing a hunting bullet.

Oh, and good luck with ACLS...! :shock:

I weigh each Partition bullet and sort into groups divided by .3 grains weight. Once in a while a .338 bullet will fall a couple grains light in weight. The OAL does vary a little and probably length is the controlling process attribute step in controlling weight. It seems as though the larger the bullet the more weight variation which makes sense.

I checked some other .338 bullets (Barnes, Hornady, Speer) when I did a weight variation study on Partitions a couple of years ago. The other company's .338 bullet weight variation was not any better than Nosler's was. This surprised me since they don't have a compound design bullet. This may be a good point for Nosler in process control.

I used to make my living doing process control and process improvements but I have never been in Nosler's plant and am happy that they can control a compound process, Partition bullet as well as they do. Without seeing it, I won't second guess the process.
 
The PT is the flag ship bullet for Nosler and they are not going to change it.
I will say that there are some exciting new products coming from Nosler. :grin:

The new products which they have released in the past few years have all seemed to enter the market easily with a good customer reception and strong sales.

I await what is coming!
