Talk to me about things to look for (good and bad....) in a pre-64 300H&H when contemplating the purchase of such a rifle. Are there "gotcha's" to watch out for?

I'm aware that many such rifles were reamed to 300WBY, too.

The rifle I'm considering is coming from a trusted source, but I won't get to check it out for a couple weeks yet. Just trying to do my research.

Thanks!

The 300 H&H was a great chambering in the Model 70. I don't recall any particular problems in the rifle. It is a great cartridge that has lost favour with many because of the wide selection of excellent 300 magnum cartridges offered today.

The 300 H&H has got a lot of history  & with today's powders will be excellent :)

Blessings,
Dan

You want me to check it out for ya?

Just PM me a number.. I'll take care of it!

So long as the rifle is in excellent condition, I say go for it.
The 300 H&H is a cool round with nostalgia. Those long slender cases are going to cycle like butter too.

I don't know of any known "weak areas" with the pre-64s if that's what you're concerned with.

It's more that I don't know the pre-64 in any great detail. I know what to look for in a shooter, but not what would make a pre-64 guru saw "wow!" in a good way or "wow!" in a bad way....like reblueing, d/t'ed if it shouldn't be, etc. Just don't know the specifics of those old rifles real well.

It may need a stock, too....not sure yet. Considering hardcore collector value will be out the window at that point, I will probably come back looking for ideas. I can't see such a rifle going in anything buy a good wood stock, much as I like a good, well-made synthetic.

An aquaintance of mine hunts a 50's Vintage M70 in .300 H&H... never felt a smoother cycling rifle in my life. Those long tapered cases feed like magic and tens of thousands of cycles on the bolt didn't hurt either.

I'd say go for it- the H&H with modern powder is capable of wonderful things.

I will say this, lol....I was interested on first hearing about it. Hearing Scotty drooling over it....well, that makes it that much sweeter.

The biggest "got cha" is somebody else getting it before you do !!!

Hence why I continually refuse Scotty's "generous" offers for "assistance"!!!!
