I have a load that was using 80gr's of H870, Speer 160gr Mag Tip, CCI Primers and WW cases. The load was used for my older M70 with a 24" barrel. I had a bunch of them loaded for my buddy in Idaho who uses the rifle for elk, deer, bear, Mt Lion and about everything else, to include wolves. Well he just called me and said he needs more shells and I cannot find anymore Speer Mag Tips, but I have hundred of the 160gr Accubonds. I would still like to use H870, cause I have about 8lbs of it and the M70 has always shot very well with it. If somebody could run a Quick Load for me using the combo in the subject line, I would really appreciate it. I am going to load up some rounds for him to see what shoots, and then load him up a batch of the best shooters. Thanks again for the help. Scotty

Hey, Scotty, it's not QuickLoad, but looking in my Nosler #5 manual, I see the 160gr Partition and FailSafes listed with the following loads for H870:

Start load - 75.5gr - 2982fps
Mid load - 77.5gr - 3047fps
Max load - 79.5gr - 3112fps

You could start at the start charge and work up carefully, though it may be that the rifle is in another state, which would impede the process a bit. Good luck on it, though.

Thanks Dubyam, that is right in line with what I have also. I have Number 3 and Number 6. The rifle has always been an excellent shooter. I think the Accubonds will work very well for him and since I have so much H870 it is worth finding something good to use it for. Thanks alot. Scotty

Scotty,

That H870 is about as precious as gold. QuickLoad projects that 79.5 grains of H870 behind a 160 grain AB will yield a peak pressure of 63463 psi and a velocity of 3142 fps in a 24 inch barrel. This will be a compressed load.

Make certain to throttle back and work up in reasonable increments as a variation in burn rates will push this over the edge and into hot territory.

I have a very good load with 74 grains of H870 and 175 PT (sub MOA and good velocity). I've been using this load in recent days.

Thanks alot Mike. That is just what I was looking for. I know what you mean about H870. I like the stuff alot. Seems like it was great for the magnums. Oh well, I guess RL22 has pretty much replaced it in the majority of my stuff. I just like it cause it meters so nicely and does get some excellent speeds with big mags and heavy bullets! Scotty

80 grains of H-870 is a load I used years ago and it shot well! I lost a lot of respect for it though when I bought a chronograph and found it lost 150 fps from 80 degree weather to 30 degrees. Maybe Ramshot Magnum will be as good? The last loads I went to were with IMR7828 in 175 gr Hornadys and this was the shitz. 2960 fps and dropped elk as fast as the 300 weatherby! Anybody need some gold, I still have a couple pounds of the 870!

Those are some hammers for 175's! Wow, that looks like an interesting load. You are probably right about the H870, but I still like it. It was my first powder for the M70 and I like it enough to try and keep it squirreled on my bench. Scotty

Good suggestion, OldMan. Actually, using 71 grains of Magnum with 175 grain PTs gives me slightly more velocity (50 fps) with identical groups as when I use H870. I'm using the H870, however, as I have it and it works.

I may have to try that sometime with some 175's. That sounds like a very potent load. Alot of SD and man, that would be my bear load if I had to carry my 7mm for the big bears.... Not that I have to, but it is fun to have something, just in case! right? Scotty

buckfever, I live in Elgin, not to far from Pendleton. I'll look t see how much is left, you might as well have it as it has been sitting for years!

I have 1 sealed 1 pound container and another half full. To give you an example of what used to be: the price sticker on one is $5.49.

Thats pretty funny, the stickers on mine say 14.49 and I think that is cheap. I got mine about 10-12 years ago. I would be in hog heaven paying 6.00 for a pound of powder. Scotty

H870 and a 175 Nosler Partition is what I used on my big bull elk several years ago. 2900+ fps from a 24" barrel. It was a shooter...

Was pretty unhappy when 870 went away. Been using Reloader 22 instead, and it's doing pretty well, particularly with the 160's.

Same here Guy, still have enough for awhile. Hopefully these loads I made up for my buddy shoot well. Once I get them in the mail today, he will put them down range and let me know how they shot. Then I will load him up a bunch of them. I figure 160gr Accubonds and H870 should be a great combo. I use RL22 for all my own stuff also. Scotty

Well I just run up on this problem and I found some 160 mag tips where I have ordered some in the past. If you will go to www.wideners.com,they have Speer 160 grain Mag Tip in stock. They sell for $21.80 a 100.

Noslers Rock!
