How does the program determine usable case capacity? I'm guessing that's different from total case capacity. If I fill a Hornady 7mm-08 case up with water and weigh just the water, I get an average of 56.367 grains. Just curious. Thanks!
 
Useable Case Capacity is Maximum Case Capacity, overflow minus Volume Occupied by Seated Bullet. Maximum Case Capacity, overflow, is determined by filling a case (after taring) with deoxygenated water until it forms a convex meniscus. The weight of the water is taken as equal to the capacity sought.

That's interesting. So, does the program have an average usable capacity for each chambering based on the weight of the bullet, or is it specific to the exact bullet, exact brand of case, etc? I'm assuming it then changes based on the seating depth... Either way, someone obviously put some though into Quickloads! Thanks again!
 
The default calculations are all based on SAAMI measurements. Your rifle will vary. The degree of variation depends upon how precise your chamber was cut. For that reason, to get a precise projection you need to measure your Case Capacity, overflow and OAL at a minimum.
 
Two more, if someone is willing: I'd like to play around with the 180 grain Speer Hot Cor in my 30-06. I'd be using Rem cases, WLR primers and a length of 3.16" I have Speer's data, but they don't list Big Game, or H 4895, both of which I have on hand and would like to try. Thank you!

Whoops! 22" barrel.
 
You certainly would have the bullet seated deep to have only 3.160 inch COAL.

Thank you! I wondered about the OAL too. That's the published OAL from Speer, using the Hor Cor. They go longer for some other .308 bullets, but not that one. This load will be for a 7600 and the magazine won't really accept much longer than 3.25 and I'm not worried about superb accuracy in this case, as it's my peep sighted brush gun. Shots will be inside of 100 yards. So, I wasn't too worried about it.

A general Quick Load question: Where in that range of "near max" loads would you generally find published max load? Do most folks find themselves able to get up towards the top of the "near max" range, or is it common to be stopped early in that zone, by pressure? I know there isn't a true answer, I'm just curious about what has been your experience/others'. Thanks again!

Actual, per magnetospeed (3 shots per)

91.5 gr RETUMBO: 2776 sd 2, es 5
92.5 gr RETUMBO: 2787 sd 16, es 30
93.5 gr RETUMBO: 2820 sd 13, es 26
94.5 gr RETUMBO: 2860 sd 10, es 21

I expected closer to 2650 for the 91.5, as you can see i got a big surprise.

I know these are too hot, and don’t intend to replicate, just curious on p level prediction.

Sierra book max is 93 with 3.58 coal. Didn’t think i would be pushing things until the 93+ range.

Hodgdon is at 90.5gr, 62kpsi, 24” bbl, 3.58 coal.

Slight ejector mark starting on 92.5, only slightly more at 94.5, with a little stiff bolt. Noticeably more effort, but it was still finger manipulation.

velocity says it way hot, and i do not intend to replicate, but curious as to what quick load says.

Have any specifics as to what you are looking for? Bullets? Powder? Barrel length? The more information you provide, the more likely you'll receive a response. Give us a post telling what you're actually wanting to do.

One of my .280s loves 139/140 grain bullets. It really isn't particular what brand is used, it gives me sub-MOA with all of them. The other .280 I'm currently shooting, gives me excellent results with the 150 grain ABLR. These two rifles have accounted for many mule deer, whitetails, elk and moose. I love the cartridge.
