Well I went too the range this morning to try out a couple loads I made up with some 160gr Gamekings. And the load I tried with a max load of H4831SC shot better than expected! It put 4 shots just a hair under an inch.

I'll mess with the seating depth some and see if it gets any better. I wouldn't turn down what it did today for a hunting load.

" ... just a hair under an inch."

Thats Min. of bull elk anywhere ya go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good load,

Yep, that's the .280 for you. They tend to shoot very well. I'm not surprised at your success. You'll have a load that'll tackle anything on the NA continent.

That sounds too easy.. Maybe you aughta try something else that makes you work at it.

I agree with Scotty, too easy. Give your self a challenge. Just kidding, great shooting and it will serve you well in the field.

Way to easy, you need to try at least 4 or five other powders/primers/cases combinations, as well bullets. You can't be complacent, 3/4 of an inch is possible. Then after all of that productive time on the bench and you do find a couple of great loads, you can have the rifle rebarreled, then start over again, thats the way I do it!!!
Congratulations on your load, the first try doesn't happen often!!!!!

This has been a work in progress. I've been working with this off and on for some time with no success, made this load up not really expecting anything great. I'm going to load up another 5 rounds and see if she'll repeat what it did yesterday.

Try 54.0 grs IMR4831 with a 160 gr PT.

That's the plan if the Gamekings continue to perform like they did yesterday. I plan on having this rifle out west with me for the 2013 hunting season.

Tecumseh: You've done well with that shot group. I was only able to get just over an inch with the 160gn Sierras. I used 47gn of Varget and got an average velocity of 2750.View attachment Last load test.jpg
The 280 Rem is great. I'm taking it out next year for deer.

The 7mm 150 gr PT could be another option for you as well. It would work well on both deer and elk.
They shoot pretty good out of my 280 AI.

I'm going too load up another 5 rounds tomorrow and seat the bullet another five thousandths deeper and see if the accuracy improves?

The 150-grain Partition shoots really well for me too. I'm driving it to about 2925 fps with H4831SC, and if I do my part the rifle is sub-MOA for five shots.

I would think a 150 PT around 2900 or so would be some great elk medicine. Pretty darned good BC numbers for the PT. Looking forward to seeing what the 150 ABLR does when it is released. Should be another hot number as well.

I'm a bit partial to the 150 PTs myself having used them to get first blood on my 284, a spike elk. They are proven performers that's for sure. I had a few loads that shot decent before settling on one that would put 5 in 3/4". Of course it could've been 3" and I'd have been just fine since I ended up shooting that spike at ~30yds

Congrats on gettin'er dialed in!

The 150 grain ETips and RL22 have been really accurate in my 280, it doesn't really care for any other powder or bullet though. Good thing I stocked up on ETips when SPS had them. I should be good for a lifetime or two.
