Range report on my wifes 270 Featherweight...

The 270 scores again...and its a commemorative moment...my wife's first solo hunt, I'm in Illinois...she went hunting herself...right through the shoulder...that rifle and scope is some of the best money I ever spent, she really likes the whole setup, and it shows....3 years ago she had never deer hunted at all, this year she has put more meat in the freezer than I have...I've created a monster!

And in case anybody is wondering...it was still daylight when she shot it, she waited a bit to go in and get her...I bought her the doe tag this morning via the smartphone....so it as all fair chase and 100% legal.

Congratulations to your good lady. It's good to create some monsters.

Nice doe picture and I believe that your lady can not go wrong with the .270Win. I have been killing deer with mine and with 130 Partitions for 50 years.

Congratulations to your lady on a fine doe and to you sir on that nice little buck.
As an Elmer Keith fan, living in the land where O'Connor reigns supreme, the first rifle I ever hunted with was a 7mm 08 that Sir Jack gave to a friend's mother. I'm a conflicted soul as I believe accuracy is paramount but having more gun than needed is handy for those inopportune moments. This likely explains why I'm in need of counseling with John Barleycorn tonight.

BTW, I'm aware that the 7mm 08 hit the market two years after Sir Jack died. :)

Upon further review...we're abandoning the 130 Ballistic Tip....its done its job just fine, but I prefer a little more penetration than it is providing.

Moving on to the 140 AccuBond...in search of exit wounds and better blood trails.

Or stay with the 130 but switch to the Partition or the AccuBond. You will still get all the penetration you are looking for. I load a 130 gr. Partition for a friend and he's shot a lot of elk with that bullet. Most exit!

That would probably work too, but I'm also after a little more BC...

This has me rethinking my 280 Ackley bullet choice also....I believe I'm gonna be exchanging the ABLR's for plain vanilla 160 AB's...I'm having doubts about the 150's exiting through the shoulders.

Too much time to think about it...lol....the coyotes will just have to deal with the 160's because I still don't want two loads.

Got 4 boxes of ABLR's...in 2 orders...gonna exchange 2 for 140 AB's for her, and 2 for 160's for me.

Roger,

Congratulations to your child bride, she is doing a great job of stacking up the kills with her 270 Win.
FWIW, the 150 gr ABLR out of my 280AI at 3100 fps has no problem going through shoulders.

Lol...Roger?

My name is Lynn...lol....that's OK, I'm terrible with names too.

How many kills you got with those 150's that passed through both shoulders?

Sorry Lynn.

4 deer through the shoulders. All bang flop kills.

Cool deal...bang flops are good!

I'm still gonna use the 160 though, I can hunt all I'm gonna hunt with that bullet...big whitetails, little whitetails, mule deer, maybe elk...I just got a little wrapped around the axle on BC there for a minute...like I said, too much time to think about it, lol.

FWIW, the 150 gr ABLR has a quicker energy transfer than the 160 gr AB making it a fast killer
on deer sized game.

The same could be said of the .277 caliber 130 Ballistic Tip...excellent energy transfer, mediocre penetration if bone is hit...I just haven't seen enough evidence to convince me the ABLR will penetrate the way I want a bullet to...most recovered 150's weigh 70-80 grains for 40-60% weight retention...most recovered 160's weigh 100-120 grains for about 65-75% weight retention.

In a nutshell...I'm afraid the ABLR might be too soft for my taste, the 1,300 fps expansion velocity is pretty low, the cavity under the tip is pretty deep...

I'm sure the ABLR is a good bullet...not everybody wants exit wounds, some say its a waste of energy...all I know is 2 holes make a trail that is easier to follow when following is necessary.

I just don't believe it is the bullet for me.

I have approximately 100 deer killed, by one shot give or take, with the 130 Partition out to 450 yards. Plus, the Partitions have shot sub MOA groups since 1965 in two different .270 rifles. These are a Mannlicher Schoenauer and a 1949 Model 70 custom. FYI.

I wouldn't be worried too much about the ABLR holding up. It won't look like a PT or typical AccuBond, but from what I've seen so far it'll expand right down to the base while holding onto a decent frontal area. Front legs of a deer wouldn't worry me a bit. Now, front legs or joints of an elk might wreak some havoc but I still wouldn't worry anymore about them then I would a regular AccuBond. If your shooting front legs on big stuff, you'll want something tough that wouldn't work nearly as well on deer in my opinion.

Yeah...you guys are right...I think I've finally looked at enough pics to get a good idea of what they'll do (not a lot of data out there yet)...I think I read one too many reviews from the fanboys of other long range hunting bullets, lol...these 150's do appear tougher than some are giving them credit for.

I've got my mind right now....and am looking forward to shooting all 400 of the 150 ABLR's that I have, and then some.

I am going to send them into ballistics gel...at point blank range, 300 yards, 600 yards, and 800 yards....I just gotta see.

The ABLR will make a fine general purpose bullet...coyote, deer, etc...and if I ever do luck into an elk hunt...I believe I'll roll with 160 grain Partitions for that, not that the ABLR wouldn't work for elk too (I believe it would)...I want to make darn sure I can punch one through on whatever game I'm hunting.

And Thanks fellas for setting me straight...
