I got up at the buttcrack of dawn, 4:45 so I could beat the heat and wind this morning to get off a few loads for my 7 RM and 7 WSM..
I also needed to zero my 25-06 and .222 because of different scope/mounts..
First was the 7 WSM. I bought this rifle used about a week ago from a friend for $150, Winchester model 70 shadow, completely stock, trigger still sucks at 10 lbs.. Preliminary testing was RL-19/140g AB, I used 2.9" OAL. They showed promise, but RL-19 was used mainly to use up the last of the bottle. It gave 1" at 100 yards and 3300-3375fps. Not to bad given the rifle and throwing some loads together, IMO. Well I had Rl-22 on hand and a few 140g NBT's left so I worked up 4 loads, 3 shots each, starting at 67.5g, 68, 68.5, and 69g. I changed the OAL to 3" as this is where the bullet was close to the lands, and still functioned in my magazine..69g showed to be the clear winner in group size giving a .175" group at 100 yards, perfect little clover leaf. It was moving right along at 3300fps as well..I also changed scopes on this rifle. I had a Leupold vari x 2, 3-9 on it, but took the vx3, 2.5-8 w/rangefinding duplex reticle (old style bracket system) off of my .222 and put it on the 7 WSM. I then put the vari x 2, 3-9 on my .222. Gives it a little more compactness, lightness, and gives me the advantage to rangefind deer out to 600 yards if my POS nikon laser 800 dont pick them up...Heres a pic of the $150 rifle that will shoot 1" or better with a 10 lb triger!! Cant beat it for a cheap truck gun for coyotes/deer!!
67.5g= .959" @ 32225fps,
68g= 2.031" @ 3250fps, 2" flyer
68.5g= .991" @ 3300fps, first 2 touching, 3rd 3/4" flyer
69g= .175" @ 3325fps, clover leaf!!
heres also a 120g NBT load with 71g RL-19, 4 shots were 1.8", not very good, just used up the remaining RL-19/120g
Next up was my Rem 700 7 RM, w/6.5-20x50 Leupld VX3 LR/T w/fine duplex, SF, 30 mm tube, factory trigger worked down to 2#, Holland QD brake. This rifle continues to amaze me with its accuracy. I am using up some 160g Speer BTSP and wanted to try it with of course, RL-22. I had 2 loads to try out that I didn't get to about 1 week ago. 64.5g and 65g of RL-22. I already tried 63, 63.5, 64 and they shot OK, but not up to par of this rifles capability..These are particularly warm loads, so start low and work up..Heres the results of the 2 loads testing with 160g BTSP/RL-22.
64.5g= .836" @ 3000fps
65g= .316" @ 3025fps
The rifle...
Results from the above loads...
Not to shabby with the ol reliable... Like I said, this rifle is ridiculously accurate for a factory sporter, this is the 6th bullet I've tried, and its the 6th bullet thats shot well under .75" at 100 yards...
I also needed to zero the 25-06. I had a few rounds loaded with 75g vmax?IMR-4064 @ 3400fps that I needed to get rid of, so I started there. After a quick bore sight, I was on paper at 100 yards. 2 shots later I was sighted in 1.5" high @ 100 yards.
The rifle, a Winchester model 70 classic sporter. Its also ridiculously accurate for a factory sporter..It will shoot its preferred loads (about 4-5 different bullets) into .5" MOA all day long...
All in all, I think I had a pretty good day at the range. I am very satisfied with the way my "box stock" 7 WSM is doing both in accuracy/velocity department. I think with the trigger lightened to around 2.5#, this rifle will be hard to beat shooting a 140g NBT @3300fps for a truck gun for coyotes/deer...
The really good thing is this, my 7 RM also shoots the 140g NBT beautifully w/Rl-22 @ 68.5g, under .5" MOA as well, so I think I need to stock up on a keg of RL-22 and 140g NBT's...Its weird how both of the 7's shoot the same bullet so well with almost the same charge and powder...
