Here is my modified 700 action and B&C Medalist stock waiting for the 280AI barrel from PacNor. The waiting is killing me!
Win 70 style safety, Keppler single set trigger 4.5lbs/12oz., Holland oversize and lightened firing pin and heavy 28oz. spring.

IdahoCTD,
I'm not up to doing the barrel install. I'll let PacNor do that as well as square up the action and then I'll skim bed the action after it's coated. I'll mount the 20moa rail and I have 4.5x14 VX-3CDS waiting patiently. I'm also sending the scope to Daryl Holland to have him install his 20moa reticle. I'm building this gun to shoot 160gr Accubonds and 168gr Bergers. There is a 1000 yd range nearby and I'd like to learn the art of long range shooting(reading the wind).

It's pretty fun shooting way out there. I started 15+ years ago target shooting and shooting rock chucks. Then it progressed into antelope, deer, caribou, elk, and moose. We use to hang milk jugs up on the post we drove in the ground to hold our targets out in the desert. It's pretty cool to know you can hit milk jugs 800-1000yds with little effort. Plus it's more fun to shoot something other than targets. Rocks are cool too.

I started with a .308 Baer shooting 150gr Nosler BT's @ 3550. It sure is nice to have the VLD bullets we have today for the wind but those BT's would still kill stuff way out there.

What's your projected velocity for the 160's and 168's?

Scott,

That is going to be one sharp rig!
Stock up on RL 22, that is the powder you will love in your 280 AI.

IdahoCTD,
The barrel is a 3 groove 26" - That should let me pull some fps but still give me a rig I can hunt with. I think 3000-3050fps for the Accubonds and maybe 2950-3000fps for the VLD. I'll let the rifle tell me how fast she'll go.I'll be after the best accuracy possible. I'd like to use this one for Deer and Antelope.

I'm going with 168VLD's in my 7-300wm build too. It lets me keep a COL of 3.6" so it works through a standard magazine box. Mine will be a #5 26" Obermeyer 9 twist. I'm shooting for 3200 out of 168's. I generally build pretty heavy guns but as deer hunting gets harder (no thanks to IDFG and the wolves) and I get older packing a 11-12lb gun isn't nearly as fun. Hopefully this one will be around 9lbs. I have some areas I want to backpack into to try and locate a decent 27-28" buck next year.

What barrel contour did you go with?

Scott

I think you are in the ballpark for velocity with a 26" tube.
My rifle has a 24" Hart barrel. It is throated long and the chamber is tight. I am getting 3019 fps with the 160 gr AB.
Accuracy is outstanding.....

Scott, that is going to be a sweet rig buddy! Can't wait to see what the load work looks like with this rig. Should be pretty quick with the quality components you are using for the build.

Great choice of component and chambering. I load for a friend 280 AI and I found that Reloader 25 also works really well especially with heavy bullet. Good luck with your build.

Your really going to like the 280 AI! Mine does really well with 7828 with the 160 AB. It likes RL-22 for the 160 AB, and 140 BT. I played with RL-17 and the 140 BT, and the results were outstanding! Well over 3200 fps and groups in the .2"-.3" range. So far it has taken two elk, One with a 160 AB @ 420 yards, and one with a 140 BT @ 200 yards. It has also taken a buck with the 260 AB @ 400, and another buck with the 140 Bt @ 325.

Mine also has a PacNor barrel on it. You'll be one happy hunter!

Should make up into one heck of a fine hunting rifle! Looking forward to seeing the end results.

Coating a action is usually done for waterproofing but is also done for looks and to smooth up the function. There are several different coating like Cerakote, Teflon, NP3, etc.

Yes the waiting kills it's like have a knife in you and everyone gets a chance to twist it until you get the prize!! 6 weeks down 10 to go for me!

Thanks Guys!
Nathan,
The barrel is #5 contour stainless with 6 flutes
Jim,
Thanks - I sure hope I can get mine to shoot like yours! 8)

That's a good contour Scott. Heavy enough to keep jump down but not too heavy to tote around. Are you putting a brake on it? What kind of coating and color are you going with?
