I just back into metallic shooting/loading after a hiatus of a few years shooting trap.

It appears Reloader 17 (and others) is really scarce.
I shoot 300 wsm's ( 4 of them) at 1000 yards....600-1000 or more is common and Reloader 17 worked the best. I have a couple 5# jugs still in stock but will have to consider a different powder if availability is as bleak as I've been reading about. I have success with other powders but prefer R17....

How scarce is this stuff now and how long has this been going on?

Thx

Not go5to find much of any Alliant powder availability other than 7, 10x, ar-comp, 15.5, 16 and 50. 15 has been off and on and 19 hasn't been seen in nearly 2 years. I bought some when Brownells had it. There was some 17 and 22 in Oklahoma city last June, but was $75 & $90 for each. Try hunter in place of 17 (maybe big game)? Those are my replacements for 17 in 7-08.

I've been a long time user of RL17 in my 270 and 300 WSMs - I switched to RL26 but that is not available anymore.
I'm going to try RL16 and Vihtavouri powders.
Good luck

I use RL17 in my 300wsm with 180g Accubonds and it works great. I've been looking for more RL17 for quite awhile with no luck. I've thought about trying Viht. N550 as it is working very well in a couple other calibers and about the same burn rate as 17.

Picked up my CZ 22LR yesterday and saw a can of rl 22. $109.00. No thanks! As much as I love 17 and 26, they will, if they show up, have to be reasonable prices. Vit. Will be my next experiment if 17 and 26 remain off the shelves.
The last I saw of RL22 was $71.00lb and thought it was overpriced. A bargain compared to what you saw.

That's what I'm using. 180 grain

I would think H4350, Hybrid 100V and StaBall 6.5 would be suitable for the 300 WSM.

One of the beautiful things of the greatest 30 cal ever made,
the 300 WSM 🚬😏,
It works well with such a wide array of powders..
IMR, Win, Hodgdon...

But....
that damn Alliant R17 is high octane in the short fat powder columns.

Accuracy great, speeds between the win mag and Weatherby...
.

I am still using WXR in my 300 WSM, and have enough on hand to hold me for a while, as it has been discontinued for some time now.
VN165 has also worked well for me with the 180 gr AB. Good velocity and accuracy in my rifle.

For now, Alliant powders such as the Reloader series, are out of production. Alliant is prioritizing government contracts and I hope that much of that ammo is going to our own forces! Goodness I hope so...

In the meantime, seek elsewhere. Hodgdon has some good offerings at this time. Remember that they own and market many other brands. Check out their website.

What kind of velocity are you getting with the N165 and 180g ABs and how long is your barrel?

2970 fps out of 23 1/2" barrel (custom King barrel that I compromised length between 23" and 24" that first factory barrels were being made on Browning and Winchester rifles...and just to be a little bit different! 😎 )

What's this talk of these powders being out of production? Ive been seeing some of the Reloder series showing up at my local shop. Ive seen RL22, 15.5, 19, 16,. However, it's not been cheap tho. I use to really like the RL series of powders, especially RL16, but since they were virtually nonexistent for so long and now with what's showing up being around 70 bucks or more, Ive moved on to others powders

"Alliant Powder Shortage

The Alliant Reloader powder shortage appears to be easing as of January 2025, according to recent discussions in reloading communities. However, the situation has been complex and has shifted over time.
As of May 2024, Alliant Powders had suspended shipments of their lines of smokeless powders for reloading due to a worldwide shortage of nitrocellulose, a key ingredient in the production of reloading powders. This shortage was exacerbated by increased demand for ammunition and propellants due to ongoing conflicts, particularly in Ukraine. The suspension affected popular powders such as Bullseye, Unique, and the Reloder series.
Since then, there have been discussions indicating that the availability of Alliant powders has improved, with some users reporting that they can find these powders more readily. However, the supply chain issues and pricing remain a concern for many reloaders. Some users have noted that while Alliant powders may be more available, prices remain high, and there are still shortages of other reloading components like primers.
To adapt to the shortage, many reloaders have switched to alternative powders from other manufacturers such as Accurate, Ramshot, and VihtaVuori. These powders have been more consistently available and have helped mitigate the impact of the Alliant shortage."
