I stopped at my LGS on the way to work this morning. I don't get to stop as often as I used to so I do occasionally to see what's new. I immediately saw a Remington 7600 on the shelf and the tag said it was a 270. It was in really good shape so I filled out the paperwork and picked it up after work.
It came with a scope base installed but no scope. I had a Leupold Rifleman 4-12×40 already and put it on.
There are a few safe/hunting marks on the right side of the stock but other than that its pretty clean. I cleaned it and the bore was fairly clean as well. I thought

the wood grain was pretty, too. The production codes indicate it was made in August of 1994.

I'm not a big 270 guy usually, but this one spoke to me and the price was extremely good, especially considering the prices on Gunbroker.
If possible, I'm gonna try to get it sighted in and maybe hunt with it this season.

That's a nice rifle. Hope you can fill a tag with it this season.

I am as dyed in the wool of a .30-06 guy as you can find. That said, the .270 is a darn good cartridge.

I’m pretty late to the party where the .270 is concerned. My Uncle passed away six years ago and left me a Browning BBR in .270! It loves the old combo of a 130 grain Sierra Gameking on top of H4831. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.

With that gun/load I have taken several coyotes, one cow elk and put down an old stifled beef cow. All but one folded with one shot, and I’m still not convinced that the elk needed the 2nd bullet. As you can see in the picture, her hide is pretty peeled up from the tumble she took.

A grand old cartridge it is, and like the .30-06, it will be with us to the end of time.

There's a reason the 270 has been with us almost 100 years now it just plain works without a lot of recoil. Just as good as a 30-06 just a bit different. Bet that 7600 shoots for you too!

Congratulations on your find. That is a great caliber in an equally well rifle. First rifle I bought was a 760 30-06 and started my reloading journey with. You did well. Hope you get a big one with it this season. Dan.

I have one in 35 Whelen. It is staying here with me.

I had one of those, too, Fotis , but my oldest stepson talked me out of it. I still have an early Model 760 30-06 and a Grice Wholesale special edition black synthetic in .280 Remington.

Back in the late 80’s my brother had a 7600 in 308 Win. For some reason he lent up trading it for a Ruger🤷‍♂️

A short update. I took the 7600 to the range with some Norma 130 gr factory loads and some reloads. It didn't care for the Norma, the groups were minute of deer but nothing to get excited about. It really liked my 130 BT hand load. I loaded it with RL-16 per some Sierra data but it didn't meet the velocity numbers. My Garmin said it was only running 2783 instead of the 2900ish it was supposed to.

As an aside, I also shot my 1960's era Marlin 336 30-30 with a Hornady 160 FTX/Leverevolution handload. It clocked a little over 2300.20241118_071227.jpg

All in all, I was pretty happy.

Both rifles look good. Don't fret on the 270's speed, that level of accuracy will keep your freezer full. Nice work Ron!

That's a good load to head out with and get a deer as is. It's a shooter so it shouldn't be hard to find something faster that's accurate in the future.
