Rifle Frustration...

I finally had enough of waiting for our rifle range to open back up so I went out to a some land that a family friend owns and set up my own "range." Had to use a plastic folding chair and table but it worked I guess. I brought some more test loads for my little Model 7 7mm-08. The load that shot this group:

I have done nothing but load up the same exact load as the ones above. I havent cleaned the rifle or anything. Loaded up 10 rounds to make sure they really shot good...and they did this today:

They are the circled groups at the bottom. There was a slight breeze blowing and it was about the same temp as it was when I shot the good group. This is not the first time this little devil shot a good group and when I went to verify the load it shot horrible. What can I do guys? Im about ready to wrap this rifle around a fence post. I really wanted to try and load for it before I messed with the actual rifle too much but I guess it might have to happen. This rifle might get put on the back burner until next spring. Well, at least it wont be ready for antelope season as much as I wanted to use it. All my effort is going to be poured into my 243 the shot the groups in the pics above. It showed promise with Varget under 95gr VLDs and 95Btips. This one will be ready for antelope and deer for sure. My little 243 was quick to swoop in and steal all the love from the 7mm-08 in a hurry! 243 also shot this group:

Im thinking messing with the seating depth or something minor will tighten the group right up. I also took out our new steel gong and tried out my new Leupold VX-3 CDS 3.5-10 on my Rem 700 300WSM shooting 180 Accubonds. I just got the free engraved turret a couple weeks ago and I wanted to see how close it was. Here is what it did

Top two marks are from 250 yards sitting cross leg. I wanted to shoot prone but I couldnt see over the grass. I guess Ill have to remember its a little high at 250 or not crank it up to 250. Bottom two marks are my 3rd and 4th shot at 560 yards. I shot a few at 375 yards and was dead on elevation wise but was being blown off by wind that had picked up.

The little seven does seem to be dialed in. I know it has been frustrating waiting on your normal range. Glad you could work something out.

I know the 243 will be ready in short order but Im not really happy with the 7-08 groups. I just cant figure out why one day it will shoot between 1/2-3/4" groups and with the same exact load the next time out shooting will only shoot 3 inch groups. It has also done the same thing with 120 Btips. It shot a group less than half an inch and the next time I tried them out to make sure they were good, it shot a 4 or 5 inch group with the same exact load. Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening? I shot the gong target with my 300WSM so that one is good to go too. I just really wanted to use the Model 7 this year since I have 7 deer tags and an antelope tag and this would be the best year to use the rifles that I havent killed with yet.

As I have had the same problem with a different rifle for a couple of years here are some thoughts, clean throughly, check all screws, check bedding, change AOL, start at full magazine length and work back, try a different scope, change powder, change brand of case, change brand of bullet, mine likes Barnes TSX and Nosler PT, but not Nosler AB, change weight of bullet. Check bedding (repeat), thats my .02.

My son went through this recently with a 300WSM. The scope mounts shot loose...

DT- Some great advice already given. Is the rifle bedded? I suspect a good bedding job would help it out. As far as the 243 looks like a good start. You will love the 95gr VLD. My 243 loves them over RL22. The performance on game has been great for me. Good luck and keep at it!

How is the trigger on the rifle?
Any Parallax in the scope?
Barrel free floated?
Did your seating die move?
Did you change shooting positions?

Did you change Primers or Brass??

Can you tell us more about the rifle?

Looks like you are set to go.
Nice shooting.

The trigger is pretty good. Maybe about 4lbs and breaks pretty clean
The scope is a proven Nikon. I could still change it out and try that
Barrel is not free floated. Will try that next too
Seating die didnt move. Im really anal about all things reloading and I measure every round after I seat the bullet. All were within one or two thousandths of where the first loads were.
I didnt not change shooting positions
Didnt change primers or brass
Rifle is a new model 7 as it came out of the box. I bought it around the end of April last spring. Have done nothing to it besides put a scope on it and shoot it.

IIRC, you got one of the Model 7s with the injection molded stock, right? I don't think I'd put a whole lot of work into bedding it. Make sure it's really floated... those stocks are pretty flexable.

Yep its one of the new synthetic model 7s. Only thing I would do to the stock is shave out the pressure bumps at the end and make sure its floated. I would really like to get a better stock for it. I guess that might happen in the future but who knows. Ive really been wanting a new Featherweight 30-06 so this one might be going down the road. Going to try a few things and then make that decision. I love the weight and feel of this Model 7, I just dont love the way it shoots.

Sounds like a good excuse to get a M70 Featherweight 7-08! Scotty

Barrel is not free floated. Will try that next.

That would be my suggestion. One of my son's rifles had an injection molded stock like you describe. It was shooting all over the place. There was a tiny spot, where the stock was rubbing against the barrel. Sanded it out, and the rifle has shot the lights out ever since.

I've probably fixed more rifles by free floating the barrel then anything else.

Free floating is worth a shot, but I find the speed bumps in Remington stocks to be there for a reason. I have to disagree somewhat with the injection molded stock being the major issue. None of the Remingtons which I own have shown any noticeable improvement in grouping capabilities by just a stock change. I don't have many, but have rifles with B&C, HS Precision and Accurate Innovations, all with full bedding of the action. In fact, two rifles delivered their smallest groups with the factory flexible stocks that are supposed to destroy accuracy. I change stocks for a better feel and look more than for accuracy.

I suspect that what you are seeing is more a result of the small action of the Model 7 more than anything. The thin barrel doesn't help, but if shot cool, it shouldn't matter much. Yo might want to move the target in to 50 yards and see if that boosts your confidence in the rifle a little bit. Sometimes our own frustrations can keep us from making complete shots with breathing and trigger control, target aquisition, and follow through. Just a thought as it has helped me in the past.

DT- Don't give up on the rifle yet. Remove the speed bumps and shoot it again. Also double check the action screws. I like them at 35in lbs.
