Rifle Stripping Copper

An oily patch? I've always cleaned the oil out of barrels before shooting by running a dry patch through it.

Have you been shooting Barnes bullets?

The only rifle I had that copper fouled that badly had been shot with a lot of Barnes. It took a lot of cleaning and a lot of shooting to get it to quit.

Interesting, here is what Barnes says...

Can I expect copper fouling when using TSX Bullets?
"Because of mutiple grooves machined into the shanks of Triple-Shock bullets, less bullet area comes in contact with the bore. This reduces pressures and virtually eliminates copper fouling".

I would have assumed that Barnes would do exactly as you said hodgeman, but surely the internet wouldn't lie?

My cleanest shooting rifle is Dad's 7mm Weatherby stainless shooting 150gr Barnes TTSX over H-1000 at 3060 fps. Even after 30-40 rounds I can hardly get any powder residue or copper from that barrel. If we dared I'd bet he could shoot it a few years without touching it.

Despite the super clean bore I got last time after cleaning with JB and other cleaners in my arsenal, the other day I took the 270 out again and cleaned it after each three shot group. Total rounds were only 20. I put five of the Tubb's #4 and five of the #5 through it since I noticed copper after the first three rounds, cleaned after each five. I brought it and the other rifle home and proceeded to clean them last night. I spent the better part of an hour and a half on the 270 trying to get the copper out. It just wanted to adhere to the lands despite using KG12, Bore Tech eliminator, Sweets and finally about 15-20 passes with a brush/patch with Kroil Oil and JB again I finally got 99% of what I could see. It took two separate cleanings with the JB to finally get it.

I was hoping after last time's cleaning and how shiny new the bore looked I wouldn't have had those problems but it happened yet again. It's clean as a whistle now but more than likely this will all happen again. :( My Savage 243 and 22-250 took less than half that time to clean with all fouling removed pretty easily.

Bullet choice... I think that the degree of copper fouling sometimes comes down to the alloy.

It does that with any bullet. I've tried Nosler, Hornady and Speer. They all do it.
