Rifles in the field this hunting season

For elk,my .35 Whelen with the 225 gr. Barnes TSX and my M70 .300 Win. Mag. as back up. The 200 gr. Nosler for that one. Should I draw for deer, dpending on what area I get, a Ruger M77 RSI with the 165 gr. Speer Hot-Core or my M70 Featherweight in 7x57 with the Nosler 140 gr. Ballistic Tip.

I'll be using a varied assortment this year:

Elk - BLR in 358Win
Mule Deer - Rem Sportsman78 in .270Win
WT in NY - M70 Fwt in 257Roberts
WT & BBear in Maine - BLR again
WT in PA - Rem 700BDL in 30-06 - been ignoring her for too long
M/L in NY - Encore .50
Coyote in NY & Pa - Encore 22-250 and M70 FWT in 257Roberts
Fall Turkey in NY - Rem 870 12ga

Just the 30-06 for me, same as always.

One might think I would get bored with the same old rifle all the time, but I just never seem to. Sure, I look at other rifles from time to time, but they just don't interest me.

Now, a Kilimanjaro, David Miller, etc. might tempt me more. But I don't have that kind of cash. Last Monday I paid for a year of pre-school, and that was definitely not cheap.

For those who will search the woods with only one rifle, I might, on some level, admire you. But, that has never been my style (perhaps wish it was that easy tho). I will be starting the fall seasons with a bear hunt in Maine. A 9.3x74R double rifle will be in my lap and a 45-70 GG will also be along for bad wx days. Kentucky deer is next on the schedule and I will hunt with my second .336ER until I take a buck. Next up will be my .444 Marlin for a doe or perhaps a buck in Tennessee. I will also use my other .375 Marlin, should I want another buck in Tennessee (limit is three). I understand that most reading this are laughing or at least saying "What the F***?". But, my lever guns are my main hunting pieces for now.

I hope everyone tags out. I know just how nasty tasting tag soup can be.....

Great pics Scotty! I bought a Glenfield 30/30 just for the Grands two months ago. I enjoyed those posts, thanks!

Woodycreek & Scotty,
You two have some good looking guns and set-ups. Thanks for the pictures.

Scotty,
Is that a couple of REMINGTONS I see you have there buddy?

Don

I can't post pics (not until I get the stock in October)...but all of my hunting will be done with my M70 (30-06)...loaded with the tried and true load...58 grains of H4350 under a 168 BT.

Doggone it. Scotty went and spiffed up this thread with photos of rifles! Now that's a challenge that simply must be answered, and I've never objected to pictures anyway. Must be a Marine thing. Bunch of big green knuckle draggers can't read, so give us cave drawings...

The bear & elk rifle, .375 H&H Number One, now set up with a 1.5-5x Leupold and sighted in with 260 Nosler Accubonds at 200 yards.

The deer rifle, and maybe pronghorn in October? Rem 700 CDL .25-06, loaded with 115 gr Noslers sighted in at 300 yards via the 6x Leupold:

It's also possible that I'll hunt a day or two with either the .300 WSM Model 70 or the .30-30 Glenfield...

I may let the Green Machine sit out this season... It's got nothing to prove.

My youngest son normally relies on his 1974 vintage 6mm Remington, or in recent years the much older .30-06 M1917, but this year he's all excited about maybe using his great-grandfather's Mauser '98 in .257 Weatherby! Yes, it's finally starting to come to life after a couple of decades of gathering dust... We'll have to wait and see which he chooses to use this year. He knows how to shoot them all pretty well. It's his decision.

Yes sir. The 35 Whelen and my son's 243 are the Remington's that'll stick around for awhile. They earn their keep..

The Whelen looks good to me, but you know me with Whelen's.

It needs to redeem itself for not dropping (where I could find 'em) the last two deer it shot; thus, the Ruger 44 carbine will have to go again.

For deer My primary gun will me the 270 Weatherby I bought from Fotis. I'm about to order a 3.5-10x40 VX-3 CDS to top it with. I have a few test loads loaded up and ready to roll. Just need some optics.

The 338 WM will be my deer back up. It will also be my primary Bear gun, and me elk back up. Have it stoked with 225 ABs sitting on top of some RL-17 doing 2800. Five shots under an inch all day long.

The STW will go along as a bear back up, but might see some primary carry time if we are hunting some big country with clear cuts. I also have the opertunity to use it is some very wide open country on a damage elk hunt. Would like to strech her out a bit on this one. But I need to a bunch more range time before I'm comfertable with this.

View attachment IMAG0060.jpg
The 280 AI will be the wifes Primary gun for her land owner does tag, as well as the damage elk hunt. She has never shot an elk before so her getting a crack at one will be my primary goal. She'll be shooting the 140 AB for both deer and elk. The Minox is still sitting in the box waiting to be shipped, so I might have to do a bit of a scope shuffle to get it ready to roll by hunting season.

All in all, I think we are pretty well set

Guy, I need to take a few picture taking lessons from you some day. I really enjoy seeing your photos. Nice work.

Deer- BLR 308, Win M70 extreme weather 7wsm, and Win M70 Stainless .375HH
