I think I hit on the right combo for my Model 70 Jack O'Connor .270 win. I tried a lot of combos using H-4831sc and the 130 Partition just because I wanted something "traditional" but I just couldn't get it to group better than an inch. I bought some H4350 a while ago to try in my Swift so I decided to give it a try. This rifle seems real touchy on how far the bullet sits off the lands. Finally some success.

Load: 130 Nosler Partition
Nosler Case (blem)
57.5 gr H-4350
Federal 210 primer
3.33" OAL (0.012" off lands)
3114 avg velocity

That looks danged good, Bruce. I think you're ready to hunt with that great rifle.

I'd say you're set. I'm pulling for you to find that NM muley.

Bruce you sure have that 270win dialed in. Go get that Mulie Buck!!
Have Fun, Shoot Straight & most of all BE SAFE!

Blessings,
Dan

One point on your load. I have found that most .270's will shoot both IMR 4350 or H-4350 very accurately with the 130 grain Partition bullet. I have used this bullet and 55.0 gr IMR 4350 in my .270 Win Mod 70 rifles since 1966.

Bruce that looks fantastic!! That looks like a classic load to me in a very classy cartridge. Good luck on finding a toad of a mule deer.

Bruce, everything about that load is exciting and your zero is straight out of a JOC manuscript. Awesome stuff. Can't see anything being better than that combo for a straight up deer slayer!

Beautiful rifle as well. Can't wait to hear how it works for you. Good luck with the NM muley!

working with the 130 Partition has been tuff. The model 70 was showing promise with a lot of 1" or so groups with H-4831 but I just couldn't get it dialed in at any OAL and at 62 grs is was still only 3050 fps. I gave H-4350 a try starting at 56.0 grs. and the groups started shrinking as I added velocity. I pulled up at a max load of 57.5 (quick load 65000psi) that was grouping a tad over an inch. The load was averaging 3014 fps with a 9.5 fps standard deviation over 15 rounds of 57.5grs I shot at the different OALs. I started with an overall length of 3.320 (what Nosler suggests) and started moving out at 0.005 at a time. The 3.330" OAL shot real well at around 3/4". I went out to 3.340 and the group opened up. I went back to 3.330 and just took my time. That featherweight barrel is trying. You really have to be patient with it. It took me twenty minutes to shoot the group posted. Ten minutes between shots.

As far as the handling of the Model 70 JOC tribute. Its just real sweet. The MOA trigger was adjusted out as far as it would go and is about 3lbs with no noticeable creep and the over travel is minimal. I prefer a serrated trigger but the smooth one isn't that bad. I expected the lightweight rifle to be a beast with hot .270 loads but the design of the Al Biesen inspired stock makes the rifle shoot soft, even with the metal but plate. The rifle doesn't recoil up into your cheek.

I'll be shooting from field positions over the next couple of weeks getting ready for the hunt. We'll also see how that accuracy holds up at 300 yds and more.

This was also my first use of a Lee hand press I bought. They're better that buttered bread at the range. I loaded all but my first group at the range. It was also my first use of Nosler brass. It loaded great and I was amazed at the consistent weight of the individual cases.

That's beautiful stuff Bruce. I love that rifle and your loads are incredible. Just something to real smile about.

It looks really cool, to me. You are ready to go !!!! We are ready for some big buck pictures.

I always get a grin on my face when I see 3 130 PT,s touching. The 130 PT doing 3100 and zeroed for three hundred yards is one of the most famous loads ever used on big game in north America. I,m not surprised H-4831 did not reach a velocity 3100. I can,t do it either in my 270,s. I get there with IMR-4831. It is faster burning than H4831 and slower than IMR or H4350. Nice job on your load work up with H-4350 Bruce. Good luck on the hunt.

Bruce,

Nicely done. Way to go staying on it to find the magic load.
And magic it is, the 130 gr PT is the classic bullet to use in such a great American classic round.
Good luck in NM.

"Finally some success". Boy I would say so, deer don't stand a chance with that load.

That's a super group with the ol' 270. I haven't tried 4350 with the 130 gr bullet yet, mostly with the 150 PT and it does good. that 62 gr of H4831 must be a compressed load and I'd say just about all you can get in a Winchester case.

I'll have to agree about those FW barrels. I tried for a five shot group once and even waiting a bit between shots the last two went left and right of the original 3/4" group. It just gets too hot regardless. so, I went back to three inch groups. I'll definitely be trying 4350 and might I ad about 48-49 gr of IMR 4064 has given some great groups with the 130 gr Hornady and Nosler PT.

After all of the heat that the .270 Win has gotten from some of the people on this forum, it is nice to see it get some love from the newer guys!

My first rifle was a CZ-24 30-06. I started reading Outdoor Life in 1968 and Jack O'Connor won me over to the 270 long ago. I had Hal Hartley, deceased for some years, of Lenoir, NC make me a custom 270 on an FN Supreme action, Douglas Premium barrel and his signature tiger tail maple stock with fleur-de lis checkering and metal floor plate and pistol grip cap. Best I recall that was mid 1970. It would consistently give me 3/4" groups with a nearly full(60 gr) charge of H4831.

I have a '52 pre-64 M70 and the JOC Custom Tribute rifle in this caliber. Ask me if I like the 270 Winchester.
