RL26 in the 270???

I’m sure it’s been covered, beaten to death and the proverbial dead horse kicked. So, my apologies ahead of time. I’m getting fine results with RL22 right now with accuracy. However, in attempt to scale down, I’m wondering what you guys are getting accuracy and velocity-wise with RL26 in the 270. I’ve done well with it in the 280 Remington and 280 AI so it only stands to reason that it will do the same in the 270. Thinking of buying a 8 pounder and I’m wondering on which one, 22 or 26. I’m too cheap to buy both right now.

I'd do 26 all day long. Generally my 270 Winchesters are doing 3150 with 130's and 3050 with 150's. That's from a Pre 64 Winchester and a Tikka Super Lite. I have been using more of the RL23 recently since I have mounds of it, and I am trying to conserve my 26 for other things.

26 is a very good powder across the board, it fits in a case like RL22 and gets the speed of RL25. It's tough to whoop.

I think it does a lot better in 06 based cases than magnums. I tried RL26 from my 7-300 win mag and it did nothing my tried and true H1000 wouldn't. Just seen a guy getting 3000fps with 170g Bergers and RL26 from a 25" 270, which quite frankly is smoking!

I would second that. I’ve used it in my Mashburn and it really does about the same thing as H1000, RL25, 7828 and a few others do.

It’s a demon in the WSM’s though and I’ve seen it lay down some amazing speeds from my 338 Win with heavy bullets as well.

It’ll really move the heavier, 200+ grain bullets out of the 06 as well.

Good to hear. I figured as much but I’m just gettin’ goin’ with the 270 believe it or not. I’d really be curious to see what 26 will do in an 06’ with 200 grain partitions as a side note. Thinking an 8# jug may be in my future. 3K plus with a 150 answers a lot of questions in a 270. Not to mention what it does for the 280 Remington/AI.

Have you done any testing with RL26 in the 280? I have a 280 with a 24" tube, accurate as hel with the 160 TMKs and H4831, but velocity is horribly slow...like 2600-2700 where the accuracy is. That just wont work for me. I have some RL26, just havent gotten around to it yet, been working on the 7-300 lately and a few other friends/family rifles.

The 85gn sgkhpbt is a favorite load. Harvested 6 deer. 6 entry wounds, 1 exit wound, 6 deer recovered... mostly right where they were standing.. longest shot was 268 yards...
I like it because there are houses in the area.. and we want to know where the bullet stopped. If it doesn’t stop, we want it to self destruct quickly...we never line up on a deer where there is a house aligned, but we all know..bullets can veer if the hit something..243 is perfect for this application.

In the upper left hand corner is a 22” 280 with the 160 grain Tipped Bear Claws and RL26. It worked well for speed without a single hiccup.

A couple of 270 observations using RL-26: First, both of my 270 rifles shoot RL-26 very well.
The Forbes has a very tight chamber so my powder charge amounts are lower but the velocity are great. The Forbes has a 24 inch barrel, Winchester brass,CCI 200 primers and 55.6 of RL-26 gets me 2906 fps with Nosler BT, Hornady Interbonds, SST and Speer Hot Cores, over the magnetospeed chronograph.
The Kimber Classic Select also has a 24 in barrel but handles 57.0 grains of RL-26 with various 150 grain pills average 2943 fps. Both rifles are very accurate with the RL-26. The Kimber and the Forbes both prefer RL-22 for lighter bullet weights of 140 and 130 grains.
These loads work for me!

Awesome speeds there with the 150 gr. That just makes the old 270 that much harder to overlook! Still my favorite caliber for whitetail.

Yeah, there isn't a hair's difference from a 7 mag with a 160 at 3000 vs a 270 with a 150 at the same speed. Just less recoil and a lighter rifle. I like both of them, but the 270 with 26 or 23 really is a serious combo.

RL26 works great in my 280 with 150g AB, 24" barrel, I went up to 3067 fps then back off to just over 3000 fps with .69" group at 100 yards and 1.5" at 200. It also works great in my 25-06 and 270 WSM, haven't tried it in my 300 WSM as I have a good load with 180g AB and RL17. I agree with the others, in my sons 7mm mag it wasn't that good.

Scotty, that is an amazing load in your 270 with only a 22" barrel!

I keep saying I’m going to hunt with the E-tip but somehow always end up with Partitions. It’s whitetail and black bear for the time being. I’ve been applying for a Kentucky elk tag for the past few years. Any year now.

Their transplant program has been very successful, even impressive.

It certainly appears that you have an excellent load. Your velocity is stepping right up there. I really like the E-Tip. The 130 grain E-Tip has become my "go to" bullet in my 270 WSM.
