Well I saw an add in the paper for a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag w/ 6.5" bbl. I didn't have the cash but I had a Taurus tracker in a .357 Mag w/4" ported barrel. So I called the guy and talked it over with him and I ended up bringing the Ruger home after a little dealing. I swapped him my 357, 450 Federal small pistol mag primers, 1/4 pound of H-110, 80 loaded rounds of 158g laser cast, and about 300 rounds of brass. In return, I got the Ruger 41 mag, a box of 210g PMC factory ammo and 100 215g cast bullets. All in all I am happy since I can put a scope on this one and its a little more gun for deer and bear which is obviously better then the 357.

Anyways, I plan on putting a Bushnell 2-6x32 scope on it and loading up some 210g XTP's.

Any preference for powder/bullets in the 41??

Whats a good guideline for accuracy from this particular pistol??

Any advice for a good set of base/rings?

I shot it about 25 times tonight and it did kick a bit harder then the 357 but not that bad.

Took a while to get use to the single action, but I think I got it down now. Not much of a pistol guy so go easy on me, lol.

Thanks for any and all help guys.

For factory rounds my Ruger 41 was crazy accurate with Win 175gr Hollow Points, good for varmints and it was good and accurate with Fed 250gr Cast Core ammmo.

In my 44 Mag I like 2400, great velocity and very accurate.

You should have fun with the 41 mag, it is a nice caliber.

My first was a Smith and Wesson model 57 with a 6 inch barrel. It shot quite well and was accurate. For whatever reason, I never could get it to shoot as well as I wanted with 296 or H110, it liked 2400 and Blue Dot.
There are warnings about not using Blue Dot at all in the 41 Mag, not sure why, I shot a lot of it.

I sold that gun because I needed some money for a new gun to shoot IHMSA silhouette competition. (Bought a TC Contender)

I know own two more 41 Mags. One is an old 3 screw Ruger Blackhawk with a 4 5/8 inch barrel. It is light and makes a great "camp" gun. It shoots best with 2400 powder. The other is a Freedom Arms that I bought to use shooting silhouettes and it has a 10 inch barrel. The FA shoots best with H110. Most guys shooting silhouettes and wanting all the accuracy they can get use either H110 or Vitavuari N110 in their 41 mags.

I shoot the Hornady XTP in both my 41's. I think it is about the best store bought bullet out there. A lot of guys shoot cast bullets in them, but I just do not feel like devoting the time to it.

In regard to scope rings and bases, I just about always use Leupold anymore.

2400 is a really good powder for 210gr bullets. Max load us usually around 19gr. Dad's been shooting this load for about 40 years now. It does just as good as any of the new fancy powders.

Nostalgia time!

I bought my dad a brand new Ruger 3 screw 41 Mag. with a 6.5 " barrel in about 1964 for his birthday. It was the most accurate big bore I've ever shot. I finished off a bull elk that dad and I shot with our rifles untill we ran out of ammo and I chased down the bull, which was mortally wounded, and put him down with the last shot in the 41 Mag. This is true. My dad was my grandfather and it was his first elk and last hunt. This took place in 1966 out of Rifle Colorado.
It is a treasure you own and with 210 gr. JHPs loaded up to about 1350+ Fps. it wil do everything a 44 Mag will do a better trajectory and less recoil. I never got Grand dad's pistol but I have a 41 mag now by Smith and Wesson. Titanium ultra light 4 ". Great gun, but it wasn't as good as the one you have if it's a flat top 3 screw.
You done good

This is the new model blackhawk, not the old 3 screw.

Just read a bit about the old blackhawks and I dont think I would have liked one of them anyways with the half cocked loading crap. I had a hard enough time figureing out how to work this one.

Went out and shot it a few more times tonight. I saved 6 rounds so I could cronograph the old PMC ammo and see where there at for a rough guideline on pressure/velocity.

The three screw with the half cock is so much nicer, the cylinders actually line up with the loading gate, as soon as I can find a three screw 41mag with at least a 6.5" barrel I'll be in heaven.

I love the .41 Magnum, and have owned some good ones over the years.
One that I wish I had back was a Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2 ".That was probably the most accurate centerfire handgun I have ever fired.Try this load ( 21.3 grains of 296 Win and a 210 grain Sierra HP) The Redhawk was deadly with that combination. Nowday I carry an old Pinned and recessed Model 57 with a 4' barrel. It loves 19.1 grains of 2400 and the old Lyman Keith style 210 grain bullet cast out of linotype.I have found that my cast bullets kill deer much better than the jacketed bullets I have tried.I am trying to talk a friend out of his 5 1/2 " Redhawk. He just smiles.

We shot Dad's .41mag, Ruger, old model 3 screw Blackhawk this weekend.

He hit the 250 Meter metal plate 4 out of 5 rounds. Not bad for iron sites.

Dam, thats impressive. How big is the gong might I ask??

I will definately try some longer distance shooting with it once I get a scope on it, but with open sites I'm kinda stuck at around 50 yards.

Remmy,

Congratulations on your Blackhawk 41 mag. I think you got a good deal with the trading you did.
I had a Super Blackhawk 44 Mag but sold it and bought my S&W 629 Classic 44 Mag. The Ruger was more accurate than I and I am sure you will find the same with yours.
I can't help you with load data but it looks like some of the fellas here are already giving you some good advice.
Let us know how she shoots and post some pictures.

I may have the chance to get a 6 1/2" thrree screw Blackhawk 41 mag.Only problem is it has been drilled and tapped on the barrel for a scope.
Any Ideas what a gun like that is worth?

Don't you just love the accuracy of the .41 mag.It is not a matter of if I will get another Redhawk, it is just a question of when?
