Sadly, I think I’m done with Partitions

My B14 Hunter 7-08 doesn't like 140 grain Partitions. I tried them with Big Game and my usual reloading process. Now they were a bulk of "over-runs" from Midway with the looks like a cut cannelure. But still.

I have good luck with the 400 (.416)and 500(.458) grain Partitions. The 120(.257)grain have been challenging in 25 Creed. I have 150(.308)grain on the shelf to try someday.

I used Partitions for many years and for the most part I always had good accuracy and success with Partitions. I know that bullet cost is the least expensive part of any hunt but I have quit using them. Regardless of my accuracy with Partitions I only get to hunt deer and hogs and with my type of hunting have come to the realization that I, personally, do not need a dollar and half bullet for my type of hunting. I currently use Sierra GK's and Hornady SST bullets with outstanding accuracy and success that is just as good while being cheaper. YMMV

I've never had issues getting Partitions to shoot well. Maybe not dime size groups but never more than 1.5" at 100 yards. That's been in bolt guns and single shots from 243 Win to 30-06. I absolutely love them for deer and hogs. They are also excellent at lower velocities like out of a single shot pistol such as my Encores. Readily expand and drive straight. I try not to pay full price for them anymore and grab them as 2nds and blems. Much cheaper.

Luckily there's tons of good hunting bullets and there's going to be a few that'll shoot good in your guns. I love Accubonds too and my dad was a big fan of Ballistic Tips. I hunt a good bit with Hornady Interbonds and have been trying Swift Sciroccos. Both have been excellent.

Thanks everyone for the great input and suggestions. I too have had amazing loads developed for Ballistic Tips…easiest Nosler bullet for me to make a dime size group, but unfortunately I shot a whitetail buck fall of 2024 and the BT exploded into a million tiny pieces and I ended up tracking that buck for 90 minutes before I caught up to him. I know the Partition would have been a better suited bullet on that particular day. Close range, shoulder bone. You get the picture. Not knocking the Ballistic Tips a lot of guys love them but that experience took me back to the drawing board.

I understand that some wonky things can happen to bullets at closer range when encountering bone but I'm curious as to what caliber this bullet happened to be?

I’ve killed an awful lot of Mule deer with the ballistic tips, mostly 150gr. 30 cal. Been using them since they hit the market. Early on i realized they were not as tough as partitions and quickly decided I would not use them on elk. Over the years Nosler toughened up the bullet as guys like us don’t read directions. Damn box and literature describes it as a deer and antelope bullet. Any way I know several here have or know folks who regularly use the bullet on critters bigger than a Mule deer. This brings me back to the box itself. On more than one occasion I’ve reached onto the shelf at my local gun and bullet store and grabbed a box of Ballistic tip Varmit mixed in with the Ballistic tip Hunting. Any chance you fell victim to an inventory error?

When compared to the Partition or the AccuBond the ballistic tips are not bone crushers. I would expect better results out of current Ballistic Tips than you describe. Please update with a little more information; cartidge/caliber, weight and distance.
Very glad you stayed on that buck and recovered him, mark of a good hunter.

Well if she does not like them then it is what it is.
Hammer bullets. These are my go to if I can not get the usual suspects to shoot.
This^ Hammer bullets acted a lot like Partitions except they are lead-free. They are the easiest bullets i have found to find an accurate load for, they kill game quickly with very little bloodshot meat, they are expensive but you get what you pay for.
