Second rifle

Well, after 8 years of only having a 30-06 and a 22, I'm seriously thinking about another centerfire.

Primarily for the range, and I could use it for varminting if I ever get stationed in open country again. But I have never shot prarie dogs before, and I have nothing against the coyote.

What say you? 22-250AI? 204 Ruger? 6mm PPC?

.30>.26<.22, halfway (science), so, obviously you need a .257 or .264, the real question is "hot" or "mild"...

...a .250-3000 or 257 Bob w/ mild 75gr. loads or +P 120's would be good, a .25-06, 25 WSSM, or .257 Bee is just more gooder, about the same w/ the 6.5X47, 6.5 Creedmore or 6.5X284, .264 WM, or 6.5 Wby...

...honestly, stop & consider what you want out of a "second" rifle, whether it's going to be a dual-purpose varmint/ med. game "hunting" rifle, a "walking varmint", or a "bench" rig, consider costs, availability, etc. Hard to beat a good heavy .223 for extended bench sessions or pdawg elimination, sucks to pack one around, tuff to make high volume consistent long shots w/ any caliber superultralite, performance comes w/ a cost, super high B.C.'s are great, past 400yds., oftentimes old, slow, medium flatbased rounds will give the best accuracy in a rifle @ 200yds. Consider your option, decide what best suits your needs...

...then buy a .25 WSSM...

Good luck finding one. I've been looking (well, not very hard) for a CRF M70 WSSM for a potential .358 WSSM build (Indiana legal for deer, and my company was looking at a contract in Indiana and Illinois). They're a little scarce!

Thanks, buddy! I was thinking more along the lines of an M70 though.

Thatta boy! Brian is picking up right where I have left off!

Well, a .223 would peg the fun to shoot meter and its cheap.... A 243 is almost as cheap and a 22-250 will rock a yote. I think that might be my choice. Still a 243 is so versital.... You really get out in the open country neck down your 30-06 to .25 and you are good to go. CL

Out of those 4 guns the Browning A bolt might be much nicer to carry and use than the heavy barrel guns, bet it would feed great too.

They do carry and feed well. I had a 223 wssm and a 243 wssm. Of the 3 the 243 is may fave.... for no particular reason!

I'll go against the norm too and say 6BR. They are crazy accurate, offer excellent barrel life, Lapua makes brass, low recoil, and they aren't far behind a .243 for velocity.

Get a life and you won't need to try to build yourself through attacking others. If your self-image is so poor that you feel the need to ridicule others, I suggest you consult a psychiatrist.

I'm thinkin' good ol' Harvey got bored on his other haunt and is branching out a bit.

To the mods....be careful with this one. He's a sly one. He likes to use proxies and such to keep getting back in when he's really determined. If it's who I think it is, he's been banned on over half a dozen usernames at a well-known retailer's forum.

Oh, and Harvey.....? Why not post in the Muzzleloader section? That's your thing, right, muzzleloaders? Let's see some of your extensive knowledge of them....

Thanks Tom, I figured you would have it nailed as well... Amazing that folks don't have anything better to do than harangue other good folks with their put downs? Don't get it...

That right there is how it all started... I said I would like a 7WSM and about 3 minutes later Fotis had an assortment of them. About 1 hour later, I had one on the way to my gunshop.. Careful, he is a dangerous man!

After careful consideration, I think I'm going to use the long action PF Win 70 in my safe for a...

25-06

Or still in the running is a 257 Roberts

It is kind of cheating, or at a minimum I'm indecisive. I would like a pure range rifle, but you guys are right--I would benefit from a good backup first.

And so many of you have good points about chamberings, but almost all are in a short action. Just seems like a waste to use the long action for that. But a Ruger #1 in 22-250 would be sweet.
