Soon to pick up a 300 Kong..now it's time for a scope..

I am soon able to finally pick up a 30-378 I've always wanted.

I must say first and foremost I was VERY impressed with the modern day Weatherby. The fit and finish was just fantastic and I don't know when they started making them here but it put a huge smile on my face when I seen made in ...Wyoming, USA!!!

That said it will be time for some glass and I've always been a quality glass guy.
I've had/have the Leupold's, Swarovski (my favorite to this point) the Burris back when they were USA made...Redfield same way...

One scope I've always been curious about is Steiner.
I have Steiner Binoculars and love them. I carry the Military 7x50 RC binocs with me with the MIL scale RF reticle and compass inside. I don't like relying on electronics when afield.

The one I am looking at right now is the T6Xi 3-18x56...

Any feedback on Steiner scopes let alone that specific model is very welcomed and appreciated.

At one time I was slightly curious about Zeiss but I've found some info where the lower line they offer is now Asian made.
I do realize some high quality lenses comes out of Japan and Leupold will even tell you that but I DO NOT want anything Asian made and the fact Zeiss is making some models in Asia takes them off my list. If that is wrong information on Zeiss I'd welcome the correction.

I'm open to any suggestions of other brands as well..

from this thread as i read what jarrett said about headspacing is somewhat funny as both cartridges headspace off the shoulders unless i missed something? does the kong have more capacity than the bee or not enough too matter? that extra 40 grains of powder between the 300wm and the 30-378 only gives 40-60 fps difference w/ 180's. i bet it'll be a blast (pun intended ) though! are you thinking about 175-200gr range or heavier? i'd rather have a more standard shoulder than the double radius also (just my preference). love to see the finished product!

Glass is always a tough one I think. There appears to be a point of diminishing returns with the more you pay. My eyes are not good enough to distinguish between 90%-92% light etc…and most people don’t clean their lenses regularly enough so might be a dud number anyway. First and foremost for me, a scope has to be repeatable and reliable. Reckon any of those scopes will work, guess it depends on what you’re using the rifle for as to scope magnifications, reticles etc.

Congrats on getting the 30-378 Wby
As a friendly reminder don’t skimp on a base. My factory barrel had a vibration the would loosen every screw on the rifle. When it came time to replace it I went with an 28” and it went away.

Trust me there is more than 60 fps with the 30-378 vs 300 WM

I dont know anything on the Stiener, but I'm like you and prefer Swarovski. But JD also has a good suggestion with the Night Force.

I think the scope of the week on my 300 RUM is a Nikon Monarch BDC 2,5-10. I juggle optics in it. Had 2.5-10’s, 3,5-14s, to 2-10 VX5s on it. Just depends on what I hunt and how close my shot is. Can’t see more than 200 yards in my woods so high powder optics aren’t needed accept for “one hole” paper punching. Too many guns to own a stupid expensive scope on one or multiples. I would probably have to spend as much as the average person would buy a house if I had to buy premium optics for every firearm I own. Guess I could sell a pile of guns and just own five, or more, with stupid expensive optics on it but what’s the fun in that?

First off congrats on a new rifle, secondly I would suggest a scope that has a known reputation for durability.
My one and only 300Wby ate scopes for breakfast lunch and dinner, that said stick something on it known to handle heavy recoil and vibration, vibration kills more scopes than anything.

Never wrecked a scope on my 300 RUM. I had a KDF brake on it which made it recoil like a 243. I have since removed it and added a thread protector. My 06’ pump recoils more than my RUM. Zero issue with wrecking optics. My 375 RUM has juggled the same optics with no issues. Just make sure to bed your bases to the receiver with blue loc-tite. Also on the screws. I also use 3M adhesive inside my scope rings. I’ve used Rosin but it doesn’t hold like 3M adhesive. I’ve had optics still move from heavy recoil using Rosin. I also torque with a wheeler torque wrench. I’ve wrecked a lot of optics when I was a kid decades ago when didn’t use these practices and optics came loose. If your optic comes loose you might as well kiss it goodbye. Had a 450BM American that I forgot to remove the factory installed scope base on and bed it. It was improperly machined and only touched on the outside edges to the receiver. I wrecked one optic and had another one. Start to slide after a few shots until I figured out what was going on. All my optic bases get bedded after I learned that hard lesson. Same goes for my big bore handguns with red dots. If you don’t own three adhesive, that would be the first thing I would tell you to get before even bought a scope. I had some laying around from sticking some graphics on a boat. I just tape the outside of my rings so all that is exposed to the inside and I just give it one quick little spray and let it sit for a few minutes to dry so it’s tacky. Scopes don’t move when you use that stuff. It’s been a common practice for me for about a decade now on over two dozen different rifles and pistols. Not one optic wrecked or slipped … and I’ve had some repeat offenders previously from super hard recoil and wrecked quite a few optics and red dots until I started using 3M adhesive.

For the next few years 1000 yards and further.
My wife and I unexpectedly had another son 4 years ago...
our last one is 25.
For the next 5 years it's going to be 1000 yards and extremely long range whitetail.
After that I'll feel more comfortable taking a couple weeks to do some hunts.

I love shooting 600/1000 yards with sporter platforms.
I dont thumb my nose at those who try to buy a group at 1000 yards but that's not me.
I love the challenge of using a weapon of decent carry weight at 100 yards or 1000.


As with any 30 cal magnum I'll start with 180's and go from there.

I shot a pronghorn a 1000 yards the first year I bought my 300 RUM in 00’. Did it just to do it because I thought it was a challenge to shoot something that far away. To be honest, after it was on the ground dead, it made me feel like I wasn’t a hunter because it was so far away. I don’t think I’ve shot a deer over 100 yards away since. The average deer I’ve shot since have all nornally been within bow range. Maybe it’s just me, but I like to feel like I’ve outsmarted them instead of shooting a country mile at something in a different ZIP code. I don’t consider long range sniping as “hunting”, but to each their own.
