If you had to build a mobile chuck gun on the cheap how would you do it?
These are my conditions:
1) Has to be reasonably lightweight (NO synthetic stocks)
2) Has to be reasonably quiet
3) Has to be easy to load for
4) Light recoil
5) Make highly accurate shots to 200 yards

I'm really trying to get a Rem XP-100 221 Fireball off a friend's uncle. I was thinking of having it rebarreled to rifle length (same caliber), bedding in rifle stock, and shooting away.

I'm not familiar with the 221, but Iv'e heard good things.

Ideas?

What a let-down. I was all ready to spend your money on a rifle for myself. Then, I discovered you set conditions for spending your money. Well, given those restrictions, the Fireball might be interesting. I do like wood for my stocks; finding a good stock should not be terribly difficult. Of course, the 222 and the 223 are also options.

The 222 would be cool!
I hate 223's though, so that's out of the question

Condition #6) No 223

Fireball brass is expensive and at times hard to find. The 223 would get my vote given your conditions. Or the 204.Rick.

Go to Stockys for your stock you can pick up a good laminate for under $300 easy. Drop in. Might have to change your metal not sure but if so that's $90 from Midway or Brownells. Your basically done just depending on tube and caliber.

An Anschutz .222 with a Leupold Fixed 6x....look out chucks!

I passed on one for $600 a few years ago....I'm gonna go puke and cry for a while now.

Whoa! Easy now. I said for years that I'd never have a 30-06--they were just too common and everybody had one. Mine shoots pretty good groups. :) Believe it or not, I said I didn't want a .308 for the same reason. Well, I'm weighing buying a .308 now. Saying you won't have a .223 because you hate it? Careful, now, God has a sense of humour.

I have stong opinions on the 223, and M4/M16 for that matter. I used one across the pond. Junk caliber IMO and nothing will convince me otherwise. It's almost like the government wants us to lose, but that's for another thread.

How about a .22 Hornet in a Ruger single shot or a T-C single shot?

Classy. Light. Accurate. Mild recoil & very mellow report. Top it with that 6x Leupold. Enjoy carrying a classy little chuck-zapper.

I really like the 221 Fireball. I always thought it would make for a great urban coyote round.

Get yourself a M700 Classic in 221 Fireball and call it done.

22 Hornet sounds cool too!

TC Contender Carbine, in a .222 would be awesome. On the cheap however depends on what you call cheap.

Zastava mini-mauser in .223. I think they make them in .22 hornet also. If you reamed it to K-hornet that would fit the bill also.

A really interesting option would be the same rifle in 7.62X39. Using Lapua brass and a 150 gr bullet loaded subsonic you'd have a really interesting and accurate shooter. The only reason this caliber isn't considered accurate is the rifles and components commonly used.

Or a 77/22 Hornet, and screw on a can ( suppressor)?
