Talk me out of a .257 Weatherby

My first .257W was a converted Mod 700 classic in 25-06. Bolt face opened up, M16 extractor, rechamber. Back then Federal loaded the Nosler 115PT. It was so stinking flat out to 400 that I didn't even reload for it. I shot a Blackbuck at a tad over 370yds in Texas, just held on hair with a +2"@100 zero. I then shot a Black Hawaiian ram at 250. My outfitter offered me $1200 for it and the scope ( a Tasco WC 2x10 they made back then) I sold it like I had stole it! ha I later bought a custom Mark X, 10yrs later, loaded the 100TSX. Shot another Black hawaiian around 150yds, but through a hole in the scrub. Same guide, he bought that rifle too! ha. A good, properly loaded 25-06 would have done what either of those rifles did, and a .257 Roberts Ackley Improved will too, and be more fun to play with! I like the really flat shooters for small antelope, threading through the brush, making head shots ( I popped a big white Fallow buck at 110yds with a 6.5/284, another flat shooter, with the 120BT who thought he was hid. All I could see was about 2" of eye/temple. It was "Shame on Him" time!) A .240 Weatherby with the 90gr X bullet did the same thing, so did a 6mm/284. No reason not to get the .257W, and the S2 is probably a good one to start off with. You can always upgrade ( which we all seem to do anyhow! ha) Good luck to you Pard.

They had a Vanguard S2 for $520, and a Vanguard Range Certified for about $900. I have a hard time thinking that the RC version is worth the extra coin. The stock appears to be nicer, but I don't know if the trigger or barrel is better. The stock and trigger could easily be changed on the S2 if necessary.
I bought a stainless Vanguard in 257 then bedded it to a B&C Medalist. Unlike some previous builds this particular Medalist required a bit of work to fit, but in the end it turned out excellent. I tuned the trigger, mounted my friend's scope and then sold it to him. It shoots great. Photo is below.

The 257 I won't sell is a Mark V in ULW that was tuned by Hill Country Rifles. That rifle is scary accurate with factory ammo, and I can't beat it with handloads.

I built it to look like a mini-Accumark. My 7mm Wby Mark V stainless will look like that when I get around to bedding it, but that's not on my short term project list. It got bumped down by my current muzzleloader load testing.

I have to credit Jim (Kodiak) for the 257 Vanguard rifle. I bought it from him used, but it was cleaner than most new firearms. I had to be really, really careful to keep it looking pristine when working on it. The new owner loves it, and since he's a friend and hunting buddy I'll get to continue to work on it.

Patrick, how is the .340 that I sold you doing? Still accurate and shooting well I presume?

The only bad thing I can think of is the lack of slippery bullets. If you burn out a barrel, you're doing something right!

Though I'd rather buy a .240 Vanguard, myself, since I already have a .257 M700 in a McMillan stock....

Why would we talk you out if it?
Is the perfect cartridge for long range deer, antelope, and whatever else gets in your sights.

Haven't used it since the elk hunt a couple of years ago. It's first in line when we get drawn for the next one, but as this year's will be muzzleloader the first it will get back out would be 2016.

Too many other projects in the works for now.

Yeah, don't be coming to Enabler Central looking to be talked OUT of something...

Ain't that the truth.

However, I have yet to yield to a 35 Whelen or Winchester Model 70.
Some lines can't be crossed.

It's reverse psychology.

If I can get you guys to talk me out of it, that will make me want to buy it before I don't want it anymore.

:scratchhead:

That made sense before I typed it ...
