After working a 12 hour night shift I "roughed it" (oh man, let me tell ya!) out to the hunting spot this AM.

I always tell myself "I'M GOING TO......hold out for a biggun" HA! Guess Im just not trophy buck hunter material. I JUST LIKE SHOOTIN" EM!

Bright sunshine forecast, 5 mph wind, 30 degrees at sunrise and it sounds like "war of the world" is starting here on opening day in Indiana! So much shooting within hearing distance I about wore my neck out trying to look everywhere at once. History of hunting this spot since 1976 tells me THEY CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE....and FAST!

An hour into season and I see a buck nosing three does in the neighboring field, back and forth, back and forth then I lose them in the creek bottom I'm sitting in but still on the neighboring property but within minutes I see one of the does outlined down in the cover right at where the fencerow and the creekbed meet.

Im sitting on a swivel seat with my "shooting sticks" (homemade) facing NE and they are straight east down the creekbed but the slight wind is SE, so I'm good so far.

The does come up out of the creek on the other side of the fence then pop over to my side and head south. I see antlers coming up behind them so......I'm ready.

This NOT where I wanted them to be...... Imagine that! This is actually the side closest to the road where I walked in from and I'm only 200 yards off the road. If they head that direction.....I have no shot, safety wise so when the buck hits ground on my side.....its now or never.

Off goes the safety as I see his haunches drop to hop the fence and I follow him in the scope (were talking a CLOSE shot here boys) and when his feet hit the ground.....WHAM!

At the shot he staggered, made a half dozen half hearted bounds covering about 40 yards in the does direction and drops.

Naturally the does stand their hooving their nose at me at 80 yards broadside.....since I cant shoot.

I was shooting my "short range" loads there of a Speer 180 (aka cheaper) since max range in this ground stand is about 150-175 yards. 100 yards probably average.

Mostly facing me the bullet hit right in front of the shoulder and ended up under the skin on the off ham. You can actually see the "dimple" on his hip in the one photo before I cut it out.

Friend Jim, also shooting the 350JR shot a duplicate sized 8 point (Eastern count) and stayed to shoot two does so we are four for four for the 350JR for opening day. He sits 25 feet up and had a shooting gallery around him going most the morning.

FIRST BLOOD FOR THE 350JR!!!

Not a bad start. Now for the does......out again in the AM. Weather is to be a carbon copy of today.

God Bless
Steve

Very nicely done with a very unique round to boot!

Superb report, Steve! Nicely done. He is a good looking buck. Congratulations. I'm truly pleased to hear that the unique round has performed so well for you. Consequently, those 180 grain Speers will work very well. I've used the 220 grain Speer to take quite a number of black bear and grizzlies, so I have quite a bit of confidence in them.

Thanks Guys!

Jim in shooting those 220 Speer, a "bang flop" on the buck, broadside, both lungs and clipping the bottom of the spine shot from his bird's nest and neither doe went 25 yards, both double lung. They ranged from 100-130 yards for his shots.

God Bless

Congrats on the deer, that 180 gr Speer certainly performed very well.

They are pretty tough bullets. I used my 356 winchester and put a 220 speer completely through a big hog in TX lengthwise.

Thanks for the story & photos. It's been interesting, following your cartridge/rifle development - and now seeing it all come together in the field is pretty cool.

Congrats! Good looking buck.

Regards, Guy

It's been so much fun, I tell ya.
I've had a few local "experts" look down their noses at this buck and some flat ask me why anyone would want to shoot something "that size". I get a chuckle out of them.

Knowing that they probably wouldnt understand why anyone would make a round either....I am pretty sure attempting to "explain" my reasons and the fun it all was would be a moot discussion so I dont try.

My first buck with the 350JR and my 90th deer. The day I have to compare my deer to someone else's to know if I had a great hunt and would do it again.......will be the last day I hunt. I Promise.

Hunting the big boys only is a fine and honorable quest. For those of that vein of our sport, I wish them all luck.

Me? At 60, Ill enjoy each and every hunt the good Lord allows me to partake in.......with thanks!

This one was, however, one that will "hang right in there" with the best of them recalled down the road.

God Bless and thanks to all.
Steve

AWESOME!!!!! Man, you cleaned that bucks clock and WOW, is that a tough bullet, it had to springing along very quickly! You might make me break down and try them in my 358 Win or 35 Remington. That is a beautiful mushroom!

Great shooting! WAY TO GO! Congrats on such an awesome rifle/cartridge combo! Great hunt! Very happy for you buddy. Love them 35 Cal's!

Steve, I imagine you might agree that big antlers are nice but they sure don't eat well :)

Don't knock those cheap Speer bullets. They don't have sexy plastic tips or fancy jackets but they do the job year in and year out. 2 speers from a 280 rem and a .308 win tagged 2 big northwoods whitetails in our camp this year.

Nice shootin' with your new round. Shooting long and precise is pretty cool but you gotta love that fast up close and personal action. I coulda got my buck this year with my 9mm compact carry pistol with a head shot. Almost spear range. I can shoot em long but I like 'em close. Congrats on your full freezer. Mmmmm tenderloin and mushrooms.

Looks like a great buck to me.! Beats the heck out of empty tag! Nice pics and write up thanks for sharing.

Steve,

Congratulations on a nice buck and a cool round.
The 180 gr Speer did an excellent job.
