The one chambering I can not seem to hold on to!

That would be the 30-06.
Great do all chambering and when it comes to classics, there are few equals. So what is it with me and this one? My firearm records indicate that from the hundreds of rifles I have owned there are no fewer that 15 30-06 listed in all types, flavors and colors. It is a classic story, every time I buy one. I get it home clean it up scope it (AKA Leupold it) and load it with my go to handloads. Nine times out of ten I come home after the first range session done. Now what? I have a rifle that will do everything, and not only that but it is in plain vanilla 30-06 flavor! Now who can live with that? Not me so I sell it. Lord I need help!

My solution is to not sell any of my rifles! Of course, I have one safe that is stuffed to the gills, and a serious need for a second one! Plus, the way you do things, you get to play with a lot more toys than I do. As far as the '06 thing goes, compared to a bucketfull of Weatherbys, it is pretty pedestrian. Just quietly gets the job done without loosening fillings or rupturing eardrums.

Will you stop confusing the issue with facts please!!!!!!!!

Your observation is spot on, Fotis. The 30-06 seems to move through my hands fairly rapidly. The one I have now, I've had longer than any other primarily because it was one of the introductory offerings from the SC Winchester plant and has such beautiful wood.

I have owned 2 30-06 and have taken deer, antelope and bear with them. They work well for almost any game in NA.
Fact is if you have a 30-06, you really don't need much else! I like the varity of different rounds.

That is why I skipped the 30-06 and went straight for the Whelen! It would end the need for the others I believe with a 30-06 in the safe. I guess with a 30-06 and a Whelen/338WM you would be well equipped for just about any hunting here on our continent and most of the world. Just can't bring myself to get one. Maybe once I get up in the years, I will come around. Scotty

Yet I have so much love and admiration for its off springs......

Agree, the 280 Rem and the 35 Whelen are two of the best.

I have only owned one 30-06 ever. And I turned it into a 280 AI. I fully agree with you Fotis, thats why I willl never own a 30-06. It can do everything, and isn' very sexy. Who wants one of those in their safe

25 years ago, I told my wife guns is like golf, you can't play the game with just one club.

If she knew that a 30-06 could do it all, my safe would hold a .22 rim fire, 12 ga shotgun and a 30-06. My golf bag would consist of a 3 wood, 7 iron and a putter!

I am thankful she doesn't know ballistics.

I can't tell you how many times I wished I had my 22-250 in my golf bag.

Ditto on the 22-250 in the golf bag and it being a waste of a good rifle range. I dont know if it was the squirrels or the stray long shots which made me wish I had it more. There is an old story going around the family that my Great Uncle years and years ago was playing on a course that he owned during deer season. On the 4th hole which was near timber, he saw a nice 3x4 buck eating just off in the rough. So quietly and methodically, my Great Uncle, then in his 80's drove the golf cart back to his motorhome and collected his 243 and well, he ate liver and onions that night. I love that story...

As for the 30-06, I have the one and only I have ever bought. Almost messed up and sold her once but then I came to my senses. You're all absolutely right, it is unglamorous, shoots very slow compared to what we have out there today, and its offspring all have nearly legendary status of their own. A friend of mine who also owns an 06 says that it is perfect for nothing but works great on everything.

I love this caliber, you NEED nothing else with one around but I can cope with that. I have lots of other rifles. Still the 30-06 always accompanies me on at least one hunt a year and then I mix in the rest of my guns, standards and magnums for everything else. She has the most notches of any gun in my safe and I don't plan to retire her any time soon. She's been too good to me.

Now for me the one I can't seem to keep one around of is 270's. I have owned two of the regular 270 WCF's and one WSM. I don't know why but they are always the first to go when I need money or a nephew needs a grad gift. After that its my 300 Mags...but never the 30-06, it always will have a home in my universe!

One SERIOUS case of RADD! Now why would you sell a perfectly good 30-06, that's just foolishness. Them words coming out the mouth of a guy who sold a sweet shooting Reminton Mountain Rifle in 280 Remington too! I keep coming back to the fact that I do want to replace it sooner than later though..................

I had a Remington 700 ADL 30-06 which was the first rifle I purchased myself. It had a 6x Leupold on it and shot great, but I sold it to get a Ruger #1B in 30-06. I should have kept both!
