khh,

Looks like a shooter load!
I shoot a M700 LSS in 338 RUM and it is a shooter as well.
What is your charge weight w/ H1000 and COL with the 200 gr AB?
I have some very accurate loads that I will share with you id you are
interested.

Where in MI are you located? I live N. of Grand Rapids.

Regards,

JD338

Great shooting load! One question though....338UM vs Whitetail deer?? Perhaps your only rifle. Enjoy, Eagleye.

JD338 , I worked up to 102 grs. of H1000 thats listed as Hodgdons max . That chrono'd 3180 30 ft form the muzzle. On the load pictured I bumped it to 102.2 but didn't chrono it. Thats a compressed load in my rifle and I suspect close to max if not a bit hot . This powder may be a little slow for this bullet weight . The COL I have to hold under 3.675 thats the longest that will fit into the magazine . These where at 3.66 COL and 3.948 over my compaitor . 4.02 over my comparitor engages the rifling .
I use Hodgdon extreme powders almost exclusively because I hunt Canada alot and in November it gets pretty nippy up there. I haven't worked with many bullets or powders in this gun just because it shoots most anything pretty good . In fact my 250 load took 6 shots total I loaded 3 250 gr. Partions 2 grs. under high limit with Retumbo they chronoed 3060 . A little quick so I backed off a bit the second loading 3 shots went 3003 fps and grouped 3/4 " . Most data I have found on this caliber seems to be pretty conservitive . With the heavier bullets Retumbo really does good for me. I'd be very intrested and greatful for any info on your loads .
I'm up near Alpena. Thanks KH

Eagleye , Yea I know , its the old fly with a hammer thing . Besides you never know when the Brown bear popultion in Michigan will expolode. Not the only rifle 3- 30-06's , 348 Win, 7mm Rem mag, 300 Win , 300 RUM , 338 Win and 338 RUM. The 338 RUM seems to keep following me around . I have a Whitetail hunt in Saskatchewan this fall one of the 300's or 338's will go. No matter which one I take someone in camp will give me the "LECTURE" how silly it is to hunt with a " cannon " . If I take the 338 RUM I will once again have to explain this is just my favorite rifle , one I have great confidince in , and love to hunt with, and yes I'm aware it's overkill for whitetail . Not sure if your intrested but a 210 partion @ 3170 on a whitetail is alamingly effective and there are no bad shot angles. Seriously It doesn't tear them up as bad as you would think. good hunting KH

khh,

Here are the loads that I am using in my M700 LSS 338 RUM w/ a Leupold VXIII 2.5x8 scope. I am using R-P brass and Federal GM215M primers.

200 gr BT
RL22 90.0 grs
best 3 shot group @ 100 yds .325"

210 gr PT
RL22 92.0 grs
best 4 shot group @ 100 yds .425"
best 3 shot group @ 300 yds 1.285" (2 shots were .590")

225 gr PT
RL22 89.5 grs
best 3 shot group @ 100 yds .450"

225 gr AB
RL25 96.0 grs
best 3 shot group @ 100 yds .567"

250 gr PT
RL25 90.0 grs
best 4 shot group @ 100 yds .490"

All loads are from the Nosler RG#5. I do not own a chronograph but will be using one in the near future so I will be able to record velocities.
I have taken Elk, Mule Deer, WT Deer, and a Black Bear with my 338 RUM. Every annimal hit dropped in its tracks. This is my favorite rifle any I realize it is more than needed for WT Deer but they do drop fast!

Any additional load data you can share would be greatly appreciated.

JD338 , Thanks for the info. Sorry I can't help you to much on loads I pulled my 338 RUM note book. I messed up a little on the first info I gave you . 4.08 over my comparitor engages the rifling not 4.02 as I stated earlier. Sorry.

the loads I actually use are

102.0 H1000 / Fed215/ RP brass/ 210 Partion / 4.025 over comparitor/3.625 OAL. this load chronos 3170 fps . and groups 1 - 1 3/8"

99.7 Retumbo / 215 Fed / RP brass/ 250 par/ 4.025 comp./ 3000 fps groups run right around 1 inch.

I messed with 225 Acubonds and Retumbo they grouped well but I never pushed them ,velocity wise , so that data is really of no use.

My gun is a 700 SS/SYN ( I wanted a LSS ) this gun is constantly evolving the loads listed above where tested and grouped with pressure bedding on the barrel . The subject picture of this post . the group with the 200 gr. Accubonds was shot after I stiffend the forarm with fiberglass renforced bondo and floated the barrel. Last year I floated the barrel without stiffening the stock I shot a 10 shot groups I'd have 6 or 7 shots into 1 " or less but I'd have fliers that opened the group to 2 - 3 ". With pressure on the barrel I'd have a round 10 shot 1 3/4" - 2 "group. So I opted to hunt last year with pressure on the Barrel. This year I'm hoping the stiffend stock will help out the floated barrel . So far after 2 test sections the results look promising .

Chronos are great . Be prepared to be disapointed , most of the time your well short of what you think you are velocity wise.

RL22 was my go to powder for years it always gave top velocity and great accuracy after I got a chrono I was really suprised at how much tempature affected it. In normal conditions it was fine. Since I hunt in really cold weather I use Hodgdon now. Do'es it really make a differance I'm not sure. My 300 Win chrono'd almost 3100 at 75 degrees at 15 degrees it chronoed 2970. Hunting in Saskatchewan in - 11 degrees on the last day of the hunt a buck stepped out at 260 yards. I aim right at him and drilled him so to him It didn't make a difference . If he'd have been 400 yards maybe it would make a differance. good luck hope you enjoy your rifle as much as I do mine I'd say by your handle you do. KH

Hey POP, don't let anyone mess about shoulder-fired howitzers...I use a 375 RUM, and LOVE the feel of real power !!!

khh Thanks for the info. I'm still trying to work up my .338RUM loads and when the rains stop I'll post what I came up with..Real nice group, too bad you missed the dime.
Thanks again and Good Hunting!!

Hey Guys, don't get my post wrong!! I was just pulling his chain a bit. Whatever one wants to use is fine by me. I know that the bigger guns tend to cause less meat damage than small hot numbers. I have a buddy that shoots everything with his 338 RUM and 250 Partitions. As I said in the first post....Enjoy  Eagleye.

There is no replacement for displacement!
I used a 250 gr PT from my 338 RUM on a WT buck a couple seasons back. The most dramatic kill I have ever seen. Opening morning of the MI deer season, cold and crispy. A 9 pt come into my shooting lane at 30 yds and quarters slightly away. I touched off the shot just as he put his nose to the rag scented with some doe in heat. He reared up and spun a 180 and fell over dead. The exit wound was the size of a nickel.
I will try to post the pic for you guys to see.

Eagleye, I knew you were just pulling my chain and no offence was taken . I do almost cringe when I meet someone or bump into another hunter and they ask what round I'm hunting with . I always get the "lecture" as I call it . I'm pretty use to it now , but over the years a few things have caused me great puzzlement .

1. The number of "experts" that can tell me all the negitive virtues of a 300 Win , 300 RUM, 338 Win, 338 RUM , ______________ fill in the blank . without ever having shot one.

2. The number of folks that have a uncle , grandfather or friend of a friend that seen a deer , elk , moose, ______________ fill in the blank . blown in two and rendered inedible by one of the offending rounds.

3. What a waste of time and money mantianance, gunsmithing, handloading and practicing for accuracy is. A box of shells can last 5 years . 2 shots to sight in ,3 missed shots at a buck 2 years ago . 2 more shots to sight in . 1 shot on the spike that was shot in the neck as it ran by " didn't ruin any meat at all" . 2 shots on a doe shot while walking back to the truck at 8:30 opening morning. 2 missed shots at the buck that was chasing the doe that wasn't noticed until after the doe was shot. would have had him too if hadn't left the rest of the box of shells in the truck. And of course the big one that got away when the gun jammed etc. etc.

4. What a waste of time and money hunting Canada , Kansas , Iowa ____________ fill in the blank is . Cause their cousin shot one almost as big as what you shot back in 91 right around here.

Good hunting KH

KHH,

A proverb comes to mind to add to your post:

Leave the presence of a fool, for there you will not discern words of wisdom.

This is from JD338...My Greek Buddy!

Hi Fotis,

Here is a pic of a 9 pt WT deer I shot Opening Morning on 11/15/03 with my 338 RUM and a 250 gr PT. The Buck reared up and spun a 180 and fell over dead. It was the most dramatic kill I have ever seen.

Would you be so kind as to post this on the Nosler board, Reloading, thread is
"These Accubonds just might work" by khh.

Thank you for your help
