TTSX preformance on Mule deer for those intrested

Kranky,
I agree to everything that's been said. Just a week ago this past Monday I posted I Killed a 9-point buck here in Tennessee. Shot was 65-70 yards at best from a tree stand with the 35 Whelen. Sent a 225 Partition through his Liver at 2700 fps, thought I missed him as he ran off, down the hollow and started up the other side, had another one ready and fired just as he fell dead. Think the distance he ran was 40-45 yards.

This is the first Deer that ever ran off after being shot with this gun, I was a little shocked to say the least. But, all the other deer taken were shot through the lungs too. The bullet did the job, his liver was shredded.

Credit the deer for being so hearty and the shot placement in the liver. Gun and bullet did not fail here, happy with results= one dead buck.

3 feet of penetration and it just ran off! Ran another 150yds!
The tenacity of some of these game animals is just unbelievable.

Congrats on a beautiful buck.

Oh I believe that.

Antelope doe shot with 416 weatherby 300 gr TSX at 3150 fps. 300 yard shot through both lungs and heart ran 167 yards!

My boy and buddy with the 416 Bee!

Your buck is beautiful BTW

exit hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Terrific buck! Great shooting although it didn't work quite the way you wanted, the end result was good.
I shot a WT doe at 60 yards with a 2200 fps 444 marlin and 265 SP yesterday and she ran. Both lungs and heart. They are tenacious. I felt much the same as you, I can't shoot better than that.

I'm still wondering about the bullet performance. On one hand I'm really impressed it went , Basically , the length of the deer. On the other hand the only thing it hit that was really hard was the scapula , it wasn't broken just had a 1in. or so hole thru it, yet the pedals were all broke off. Because the he was 250 yards away I don't think the velocity was excessive. If he was 20 ft. away when I shot him then maybe I could see the pedals shed off. What do you guys think ?

Wow Fotis , you really know how to kill a fly with a hammer! I like it!

Its always interesting to see these results, I had a similar experence a few years ago with big whitetail, I didnt consider the hold over of a 30/06 lined up 3" high at 100 yds........... fired at the white patch on the deer throat , didnt compensate for the 4" error at 175 yds. Hit him right in the mouth, with 150gr BT. He went right over backwards and ran 100 yds as if it was a clean miss.......... I actually said to the fellow that was with me, I cant believe I missed that deer! He said, I dont think he did I heard the bullet hit him?
So we walked up to the spot he was at when I fired, he found right where that buck was standing, and hollars to me there is teeth laying here, "well you gave him a root canal!" So we took after him, about 175yds from where I had shot him, he was standing there weaving ,and appreared to be in huge trouble, we dispatched him promptly with another thru the neck, we later found the bullet in the front of the front of the diaphragm! How in heck he could run that far, hit like that, showing no sign of being hit is behond me but he did.

I guess I've just been lucky. I've yet to have a biggame animal travel very far after a good hit. Double lung or high shoulder, they rarely get 50 yds.

I think Barnes are great bullets but the petals seem to shear too easily. Had it happen with the Whelen. It killed okay but I still think an expanding bullet that maintains a larger frontal area will kill faster, especially deer sized animals. Swifts, Noslers, and similar bonded bullets work better for me. Accubonds are a great compromise in my opinion. Great expansion and they penetrate far enough. My little brother runs a 120 PT at 3300 from his 257 Wby. He has had a couple of runners, but very short (under 70 yards) but they have all left a ton of blood and excellent wound channels. I think a 120 A-Frame might be as good or better since it'll hold that wide front end under the extreme speeds the 257 is capable of.

Awesome buck! He's a buck of a lifetime! Congrats.

Fantastic buck khh. I've been looking for one like it for years. As to why you recovered no petals, not sure.

I have had a similar "deer who didn't know he was dead" experience. A small mule deer shot with a Barns out of a .243 actually went back to eating after being hit. I couldn't believe I missed as I was no more than 75 yards away. As I was lining up a following shot he turned around and blood was pouring out of the exit wound while he continued eating! Shot him in the neck which resulted in a DRT. His girls milled around and sniffed him a bit then ran off when I walked up. He was hit through the lungs as I neglected to adjust for the short range, but still!

Yes, tough animals out there. Be sure of your shot and ready for a follow up.
