Ultimate long range Varmint setup?

So did some more lookin and I was pretty short on what you can push a 90/95 gr. at. Looks to me like 3150-3200 could be reached pretty easy depending on barrel length. I'm kinda liking the sounds of the savage build idea!!!

I think that a Rem 700 VLS in 6MM Remington would be a good varmint rig to meet your criteria.

I don't see this in Remington's '08 catalog. Bummer, 'cause I really like the 6mm. My first rifle was my grandfather's Rem 788 6mm.

I had a 6mm VLS. Like a dummy I sold it.

6MM Remington launching the 87 grain V-Max at around 3300 fps is hard to beat. I have my first and only long range varmint rig chambered for this round. It is built around an old Argentine Mauser 1909 with a 28"-10 twist Shilen match grade barrel. My longest kill to date was a crow at 598 yards.

+ 1 on what Desert Fox has said, especially when you bring in the 500-600yd scenario due to wind drift. As much as I like my 22-250 Ruger Target gray and my 22-250 Ruger MK II and I have accurate loads I have developed the wind does become a problem at that range. Now can you kill with it at that range? Yes, those of use who have done so know you can but we also know you will have a greater percentage of misses of bad placed shots because of the wind. The 6mm minimizes the impact of the wind on targets at around 600 yards and gives you more consistency at 400 plus.

Ideally, you really need at least two rigs. While I love the 6mm, after an afternoon of high volume shooting, it can become a bit of a handfull. So a sensable shooter obviously needs to pair a .22-250, Swift, 6mm or .243 with a similar rig in .223.

At one point in life I really wanted a fast-stepping .22 varmint rifle... But after clobbering a mess of varmints on each coast with my 6mm Remington, I never really found a desire for a .22 varminter again...

Did play with a .204 Ruger for a while though... That was FUN!

Backing up what BK said, I think ya need 3 and thats what I typically use. I have tried all (in a varmit profile) from .17 Rem to 25-06. Currently use my 6mm Ack on a VLS platform, a 2/250 in a VSSF, and my new favorite a 204 in a M77VT.

For the long ranger shots, I set up my 6AI on one bench and pick mound waaaayyy out there and shoot conservitively.. Might only shoot 50 rds outta that one all day.

But I set up another bench with the 204 and 2/250 alternating for everything else.

Cant have too many Varmint guns... Heck I am considering a 460 S&W for my next one... With big bore pistols, its a blast just hitting the mound at 400+, kinda like walking in mortor rounds..

Ah, cant wait till spring.......

I like your thinking, noDak. You know what might be fun is a Sharps buffalo gun. Talk about being able to see your misses! I hate to go all Mike Venturino, but he does come up with some cool ideas!

Find you a used Savage and go to www.accuracyarms.com and get you a 26" Shilen SS select match barrel for $265.00 in 6.5X55 Swede. Then get you a Hogue full bed stock for under $200.00 and a Rifle Basics trigger. Put you some good glass on it and you will have a great long range varmint to elk killer. Those Sierra 100 gr hp's or Hornady 95 V-maxes at 3200+ fps really have the red mist factor going for them. A 120 Nosler BT at 2900+ fps will do a number on a deer and a Nosler 140 Partition or 130 AB at 2800+ fps will put an elk in the freezer just as quick as a big magnum.

BK, your right, gotta try it..

One year I borrowed a friends Marlin 1895 in 45/70 used black powder loads and cast boolits. Just for fun and it was a blast, literally!! Like I said, just hitting the mound is a blast... Really it is fun, pull the trigger, set the gun down, grab a soda, sit down and spot your own shot without optics!!!

Thats why I am thinking the .460 SW, low impact 45 Colt bp loads or hi perf...

Sorrry bout getting off track Pop. Get off the pot and just go buy one , lots of good ideas and selctions posed to ya... Your gonna need two more anyways.... And then a Shiloh Sharps, and then use the 458 Lott..

Merry Xmas all...

The 6MM-87 grain V-Max with a B.C in the high 4's, is very impressive. I could push this bullet at 3500 fps if I have to, and it's shoots flatter than my 300 Win Mag at 1K and will only drift 8.25 MOA on a 10MPH wind.

Pop,
The 223 Rem or 22-250 Rem would fit the bill but may be tough when shooting P dogs at 600 yards in the wind.
The 243 Win would make for a dandy at those longer ranges in the wind. I like Powerstroke's idea, 240 Weatherby.

Jeez, all I can think of is how expensive it would be to feed a .240 Weatherby varmint shooting. In that horsepower range, I'd rather go with a .243 or 6mm (my choice) and run an Ackley chamber. Assuming you handload.

How about this? Reminton 700 vs-sf in 22-250. It is a great shooting rifle and very accurate to boot.

Yeah, I know. But it'd just be my luck somebody finally listens to me, has a rifle chambered in an Ackley, then says, "oh, by the way, I don't handload". Dumb thing to say, but it would be dumb not to say. Just a little CYA thing.

Besides, there is a topic here for Nosler Custom ammunition, right?

I know, it sounded lame when I typed it, too.

Oh, I know. But, man, sometime I need to think things thru a little more... this is the Nosler forum. Duh!

Did you buy a new gun yet? I have a 22-250 and a 223 WSSM I just bought a Remington SPS varminter with the heavy barrel. Right now you will also get a 40 rebate with that gun. I bought mine at sportsmans for 489.00 and than I got the check in the mail. I bought a bushnell 3200 5x15 tactical. Total price around 900.00 not counting the dies and 5 pounds of varget. Now the good part. Went Pdog hunting the last week of oct. Pounded as many as I could with that gun before the state starts forcing my friend to poison all of this dogs due to a neighbor complaining about them. I never used the other two guns farthest shot around 400 yards. Sweet heavy barrel and totally addicting.
