Varmint load for 16" AR?

I have a 16" dpms stainless bull in .223 with 1 in 9 twist. I've shot quite a few 75 grain bullets through it out to 600 yds or so. I'm wanting to use it for some coyote calling and possibly ground squirrels as well. Living in California has me limited to hunting with copper bullets so I was looking at the 40 grain lead free ballistic tips. I'm looking for at least 3600fps...more is better. I realize that the short barrel is going to hurt me some but I've seen loads over 3800fps in a 24" barrel.

The powders I'm looking at are Accurate 2200, Accurate 2015, RL7, RL10, Benchmark and H4198 or IMR4198. I can't even find RL7 or H4198. RL10 and Benchmark are scarce but I did find some. A2200, A2015 and IMR 4198 are available but I hear that metering IMR4198 is about as painful as 3031. Anybody have a suggestion for me on these powders? I'd like to order a couple to try so I can make the hazardous material fee worth it.

I've had great groups with R10x and 52gr Sierra soft points. My 16" Stag Arms AR barrel loves anything with a flat base. I can run a QL for you in the morning if you'd like.

Sounds good on that QL! You guys that do that sure do contribute a lot to this site.
I'm sure this combo is going to need a fairly fast powder even for a .223. If it wasn't for this copper mandate I'd stick to heavier bullets but as is the 40 grain lead free ballistic tips are as heavy as I've seen in a frangible bullet.

...Speer TNT Green & Barnes Varmint Grenades are "non-lead" & available in 50grs.

I haven't heard anything good about the Speer tnt green. I have read some ok things about the varmint grenades but also that they aren't always exactly grenades. I'd like to try the hyper velocity copper lightweights for this application. If they are too fragile for coyotes then I will try the 50 grain VG or some of the controlled expansion copper bullets if I must.

We run a few DPMS 1:9 .223 bulls in our crew... 20 inchers and longer...but it really doesn't matter...DPMS sells a good bull barrel imo. Don't waste a second thinking about the 16 vs longer velocity differences ...with the lighter bullets... velocities will be plenty fast regardless

With the lighter bullets ours like extruded powders H322 and IMR XBR 8208, and the ball powder standard is H335. My nod goes to the H322 as I have yet to own a bull bbl that doesn't like it with the lighter bullets ...but all barrels are diff so ymmv. However, my guess is you will find an accuracy node with any of these three in your bull .... pick one or find one (or two at the most) and buy it and see where it takes you in my opinion.

(another side benefit of the H322 ... is that you won't be nearing compressed loads with the lighter bullets you mentioned. With some of the other powders, depending upon the manual....you might be. Not that that should bother you, nor should you need to go to max to find an accuracy node in my experience ......just saying H322 tested load recipes typically call for lower weight charges when generally compared to others as it is a slightly faster burning powder than other 223 powders generally)

This (compressed or not compressed) may or may not be important if you are going lead free....as bullets are sometimes/typically longer to get the weights up with the lighter material. Check the manuals for load test data for the specific bullet manufacturer and type of bullet (not just weight of bullet) once you decide on a specific non conventional lead free bullet if this is important to you so you aren't surprised.

Thank you very much sir! Those velocities are a little under welming however. I guess it is what it is...as long as it goes bang and a lead free bullet is coming out I doubt a coyote will be shaking it off. The RL7 is interesting. I read a thread where some guys were loading up to 27gr of powder and getting around 3900fps out of their 24"-26" .223's!

Again- sorry I left you hanging. Fixed my settings so I automatically get notified now.

There's a 20-30 fps difference per inch of barrel if you want to get a quick idea of performance between barrel lengths.

I freaked out when I saw all the pistol powders near the top of the QL- very compatible to my loads for .300 blkout, but not nearly the velocity!

No problem. Thanks again. Gives me some powders to keep my eyes open for. A little faster then I was originally thinking. The only powders with decent velocities I can find are A2200 and IMR 4198. I am using commercial .223 brass though so the case capacity is a little higher I believe.

Here's the QL for .223 using 31 gr H2O. I had measured RP,LC,FC,WIN,PPU,FIO, and PMC a while back and the spread was only .1 to .3 of a H2O grain. This is using my measurement of 31 H2O grains for RP brass. This looks more like it should...
