So, bullet correctly states that velocity is a critical component of a projectile’s energy. However, in terms of their effect on an animal, energy and momentum are sort of apples and oranges.
Great point, its keeping all parts of this in perspective for what we are shooting at that matters.
A 55gr acceleator round will penitrate a 3/8 inch cold rolled steel plate. But it useless for large game hunting where the game don't have armor. Energy just for energy sake is usless on big game, but great for vaporizing parrie dogs and penitrating armor plate. And for long range like 600 or 1000 meter shooting you have to give up velocity for a heavier bullet for more momentum to acheive a OVER ALL flater trajectory in a cartridge.
For large game deer/elk etc there is a usefull window (prespective) where you can lean toward more energy or toward more momentum. Yes you will always need enough veloctiy to meet the trajectory for the yardages hunted. But going to any extream is not the goal of goals and usually not a good thing to do.
Energy as strickly gaged by foot pounds alone is the most ineffective measure of large game killing power I know of. There is just to many factors that have to be concidered and to many great killing cartridges of verying calibers, velocities, and bullet weights.
Basical I only need enough velocity to acheive the trajectory I need to, have the momentum needed to, get a expanded bullet to 100% penitration. This could be a big heavy slow bullet, an lighter faster bullet or something in the middle.
For comparisons a 270win /30-06 will do anything I want out to say 350 yards if I want more power/range for say 450 yards i will then look to the velocity and momentum of a 300/338 mag. But at 100 yards the 300/338 mag isn't gunna help me more than the other two will. Thats where dead is dead, gravity only works at one speed, and only more meat damage is the resualt.
Velocity import yes but not any more than the other factors.
