What calibers do we need?

A 6mm variant able to shoot heavy for caliber bullets and a 300 win mag that can shoot 200-230 class bullets. I have seen the 6mm take deer efficiently past the 600 yard mark, and the 300 past the 900 mark. Just my opinion, but for North American game I believe the 300 win, norma, Weatherby or 30-338 win can get the job done efficiently.

Man, I have pondered this since you all put it up. I guess I'd likely use my 270WSM/7mm WSM as the light rifle and the 338 Win Mag or 35 Newton as my bigger ended rifle. Any pair of them would work just fine for me. I really like my 338 and 35. They fit my style of hunting and while they are probably alot heavier than some would want, they work well. The 270 and 7mm are excellent deer killers and work well in the elk woods as well. I don't really varmint hunt, so I don't really put much into that category.

35 Newton

338 Win Mag

270WSM

7mm WSM

300WM with 180gr Accubonds and 243 with 90gr AB's (would like to see a 100gr) get my vote.

I have both in Sako m75ss rifles. I was a one rifle guy (300WM) till the rifle bug bit me. I have a thing for Sako m75 rifles!!

If and I say "if" we had to have the bare bones minimums here are my 5 guns for the minimum:

.22 L.R. for squirrels and such

.22-250 for larger, farther away vermin

.30-06 for all big game

12 gauge for fowl and foe

.45 Colt for plinking and self-defense

These to me are the bare bones minimums and what I would want if that were the parameters.
Yes, but if you were to have only two, for coyotes on up through the great bears, what would you take?
I assume everyone will have a shotgun, a 22LR, along with a handgun of choice.

Sorry Vince, guess I didn't understand the rules. Guess I would still go with the .22-250 or a .243 and then my .30-06. Without question.

This has been a very interesting survey topic!

Those Sako's are hard not to love. Beautiful rifles and all I have seen or heard of were shooters!

Interesting choices.
I ponder what those in the north country, where the great bears roam, select?

Somebody said the .257 Bob and .35 Whelen. Tempting selection. About all I hunt anymore is cow elk on a ranch hunt and I use my .35 Whelen for that one although any number of other rifles I own would work just as well. I'm kind of superstitious and as the Whelen is my lucky elk rifle it stays. With my bad knee getting out and wandering he hills with rifle in hand is no longer an option, whatever second rifle I choose would have to be a capable back up for my annual elk hunt. Probably go with a 30-06. I do shoot a lot of cast bullets in my rifles and the 06 and the Whelen are excellent cast bullet cartridges. I believe I have a lifetime supply of Wheel weights, linotype and pure lead so that's not a worry.

Don't need any! I can kill anything on this planet with my bow! Though, I do not want to think about such a world.

So what you are saying is pick 2 calibers to cover everything from coyotes to brown bear?
Bore size or cartridge?

JD338

or white bear

I dont know about need, but we do use only two rifles for everything when working, 7mm wsm and a 45/70

My grandfather would say 257 and 340 weatherby

I would not be unhappy using the the 375 H & H with either the 300 H & H or the 275 H & H, but prefer lever action rifles

6mm Remington and 30-06

I would still have to have a 280 Remington or a 280 AI to go with those two even if I'm not allowed to have three! Just saying.

You mean I can't have my 12 different rifle calibers, included the 10-22 in the count.

I'm glad you entered the fray, Huntress.
Your living where you do gives a unique perspective that many don't have and I thank you.
Your grandfather seems to have a good perspective on things but I'm surprised at his selection. No offense meant. It just seems to be a pair of relatively new calibers given grandfatherly status. :)
For those wondering, I'm asking this in order to lessen some of the clutter in the safe prior to a pending move. I admit that I didn't include white bears and perhaps I should've as they may be in the area I'm planning to relocate to.
To derail my own thread, the wife and I are preparing to move in six months to a year from now if all goes well and we will start over in Alaska.

Vince, for Alaska I'd still say your 338 and 6.5x284 would work very well. I'm not sure I'd be inclined to change much myself.

As for your planned move, congrats. It sounds like a dream move to me.

Congratulations Vince that would be a dream move for me as well. I think that being Canadian I would have to stay within Canada .
If I was 30 something again I would take a serious look at the Dawson Creek area :). I really believe that Doc has the best of both worlds as he has the rolling hills & is 1/2 hour from the Mountains .

Blessings,

Yup! I could speak Canuck I believe! I love BC!

The question is what "calibers" do we need, but everyone appears to be answering what "cartridges" we need. Calibres, I'd say 28 calibre and 35 calibre. Cartridges? I'm not even going there.

Vince

Vince, as Scotty knows my grandfather definitely marches to the beat of his own drum and is by some standards eccentric I guess.

Scotty, it is always fun to come to town for supplies and get to play on the internet for a couple of hours. I hope all is well with you and your family and when you are home, I hope you are having fun playing with all those new bullets.

Vince, congratulations on your move. Scotty and I have a friend that moved his family from El Paso to Alaska and never looked back. I hope your move is an easy one and that you and your family love Alaska

Until next time guys
