Where’s Dr Mike?

Thanks for asking, Walkinghorse. I'm still around; lurking more than posting. Growing older ain't for wimps! A degenerating cervical spine has left me with with some severe deficits in my ulnar nerves (bilateral). My broken lumbar spine (resulting from some youthful excursions) has also caught up with me, making it difficult to stand very long. (Anything I detest, its a degenerate preacher! And if he's spineless, all the worse!) Writing is increasingly difficult, and much of my correspondence is being curtailed. I am able to get out for brief excursions into the mountains. I was out with a friend last evening. We saw three bears, three moose, and a number of mule deer. Didn't shoot any bears, but it was good to see the bruins. Going into the bush for wounded or downed bears is about out of the question for me now. So, I try to arrange going out with younger fellows or ensure that we have a winch on the truck. Otherwise...

Say on my brother!!

Dr. you are not alone. It's happening to all of us. Wish i had the genes of my 83 yr old uncle. Up until a few months ago he was still putting roofs on. The guy he helps won't let him on a roof now.

The trials and tribulations of the tax we pay for decisions we make when we are bullet proof and immortal can be heavy. At the end of the day, father time makes sure we all pay the piper. We are too smart to listen in our youth, too bullet proof to yield, and too proud to change course..... then it all catches up. I'm not 80, but the price of my activities and choices are starting to come and I know... I'm going to be in for it as it progresses!

Glad to hear you are marching on @DrMike and finding a way to get out on the MTN

Hoping you can find ways to stay active and content Dr. Mike. I have been having my own health issues that have an unknown cause. I had excruciating stomach pain maybe a month ago and felt out of sorts since then. Had it happen again yesterday, but I managed to catch it with some pain killer before it got bad. Still leaves me with brain fog, a disgruntled stomach, and feeling worn down though. Maybe some sort of allergic reaction I am thinking at this point, combined with chronic fatique that I have had for years.

Glad to hear that you are still on the right side of the daisies Dr. Mike. You’re an honest humble man of good character, that seems be lacking today on the ‘net. I really was disappointed to see the Ladies driven from this forum, and was hoping that the same had not happened to you .
As for your health, yup, it’s inevitable. I’m 78 and just got a permanent handicapped parking permit. Fibrosis and a second round of heart stents greatly dictate what I can do in a day. Gone are days when I drag a deer half a day. I’m forced to hunt out of a stand which I really hate. It also seems that when deer season comes, I am also visited by some respiratory ailment that wrecks my season.
I have 42 acres and look forward to tending the cameras to see what the bucks look like. I still enjoy the preparation and lead-up with the hunting rifles.
Glad to see that you have youngsters to help you enjoy the woods.
Best Regards,
Fred.

I was offered a handicap parking permit, but couldn't bring myself to park that close to the entrances. It would permit me to shoot from inside my truck, but that had scant appeal for me. Far better to go with some younger men and let them help me. Besides, I enjoy the company as it gives me the opportunity to do some instruction. Fred, I'm pushing eighty, and may just live into my nineties, though I will do so with a lot of baggage. The trip has been a hoot! Wouldn't have missed it for anything.

Words well spoken.
As people age some take the easy way and for you , you’re choosing to keep the body and mind sharp.

Doc, read you're comment and said to myself at 82 years I'm slowly heading down that road. Thinking back when I was a youngster (70 years) I was still heading to Colorado for my annual Elk hunt and got my first inkling of issues. AFIB creeped up on me and although I fought it I found altitude didn't work out too well for me anymore and the Doc finalized that. At 76 I experienced a heart attack and found out that this is a common ailment among the police profession. It pissed me off as my whole life has been swimming, SCUBA diving, hunting, baseball and a lot of other active sports. You say to yourself "why me?) Five stents later I'm still shaking my head. (Got my fifth stent this past week) Doc says to me you're still in good shape for your age and I look at her and try to agree but walk away wondering. Thank god Florida has good Duck Hunting (airboats are a must have down here) I move a bit slower but I Still keep up the fight. Wish the same for you.

Dr Mike you sound a lot like my Dad. He turns 80 this year and still gets out and about. There is a stubbornness in him too which I would call life enhancing. Plenty of people at 80 are just breathing not living. Here’s to wonderful past times and adventures that keep us looking forward.
