Which rifle rest???

I've never owned one, always used a backpack...but my buddy built a table on my 100 yard range (sight in range) and I want to put a rifle rest on it.

I've looked at them online for 2 weeks now and have some ideas but I would like to hear from some folks who have them or have used them.

Caldwell makes a few nice ones, I'm not interested in the Lead Sleds (I want my shoulder on the stock, cheek weld too)...just a shooting rest that is rock steady and not more than about $200.

Doesn't have to be Caldwell...those are just the ones that pop up in an internet search the most. Actually...anything that will work would be nice to hear about (rear bags and bipods, the big filled bags, etc.....anything that makes for a good steady sight in rest)

All help is appreciated :)

P.S....wasn't sure exactly where to put this thread, but chose here because the rest will be used to test rounds that I've loaded...trying to cut down on the rounds fired during sight in. I sight in a lot of rifles for other people...its getting to be time consuming at times (you know, those days when you just can't do anything right... )

I shoot off sand bags my wife makes. Even the legs from an old pair of denims when they are filled with silica sand will provide a stable rest.

I used to have some sand bags but they dry rotted...I kinda wanted something with adjustments, but if the bags are steadier than a rest of some type that might be my best option.

NICE RIFLE!!!

I have access to multiple rifle rests, and they work very well. However, I personally prefer the bags. They do give me a stable platform to assess the potential of the rifles I shoot. The bags my wife makes are double blind stitched and filled with silica sand. The small bags for the rear are four pounds each; the front bags are six pounds each. Consequently, the rifle was a Rocky Mountain Rifle built on a Defiance Action chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum. It shot very well, indeed.

Results of a stable platform and a well-built rifle.

I have a leather bag filled for the rear and a caldwell ROCK Jr. for the front. The caldwell is adjustable up and down which is nice. I like it and use it alot. HOWEVER, I do get some wiggle that is noticable on 9 to 12 power. When I want ROCK solid I pull out the sand bags.

Ridgerunner, I have used or owned several gun rests from $20 to over $300. Currently I have a couple of Caldwell rests, The Rock with leather rear bag and the Leadsled only good for initial sight-in of heavy kickers.

I find myself going to the sand bags 9 out of 10 trips to the range. Once I get a gun sighted in or a best load worked up, I use either my bipods to practice off, or backpack, or a stump at the range. That way I know how my gun and I can do using what I will in the field.

Good luck on your decision.

Same here, I love the sand bags for the majority of shooting. They are easy to manipulate and pretty nice once you get settled into them.

I knew it Mike that is your new rifle and I sure like what side the bolt is on
It was just a matter of time welcome to the left side

ps what stock is on that RMR 7 mm?

Blessings,
Dan

McMillan A5, as I recall. It was a sweet shooting rifle, even if the bolt got turned around. Do you have your rifle yet, Dan?

I just ordered a Bulls Bag...the 10" field model...we'll see how it works.

Ridge,

I have been thinking of getting the same one. Let us know how it works.
Did you order direct from Bulls Bag?

Will do JD...yes, direct from Bulls Bag.

It will be a little while though, I won't be back home until 08/31.

I have the 10" bulls bag and like it alot. Its not too big and works well. I have a box of bags and different rests but use the bulls bag the most. I picked it up directly from them at one of the big sports shows a few years ago. I think you'll like it.

...think you'll like the "Bull Bag", mine's filled w/ silica (blasting sand) & I've been using it for over 10yrs.

...seems to work fairly well, even w/ a "factory A-Bolt"...

Yeah, that is pretty nice Gene.. Might have to look into a bag like that. Looks pretty useful for everything!

...while WY prohibits shooting from roadways, G&F regs. specifically exclude "two-tracks" as being defined as "roads", so when yer out bouncing around across "nowheres" you can stop, grab the Bull Bag outta the truck bed, throw it on the hood, & have a fairly stable platform for "reducing furvicious varmints"...

My Bulls Bag and my new portable shooting bench/range cart (its got an extendable handle and wheels like a tag along suitcase)...gonna take it for a test drive in a day or so.

Link to tool box... http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-sit- ... ockType=L4

Easily holds the Bulls Bag, chrono, ammo, ear muffs, and just about anything else I might need...and I don't have to carry it, LOL. Very sturdy box, not at all flimsy or flexible...about the right height for sitting and shooting, but might need a little something under the bag (section of a 2x10 or similar).
