WTB Ruger Number One in 450/400 NE, .405 Winchester, 9.3x74R or .300 H&H. Want rifle with some figure in buttstock and will use as shooter so being previously shot is no big deal.

I found one, a 9.3x74R, Number One, thanks anyhow guys.

Charlie,

A Ruger No. 1 in 9.3x74R would be an awesome rig for just about anything you would ever want to hunt.

I would call it a 375 H&H.

I can get 2450 fps with the 287 gr bullet which is plenty of hoursepower. With the Number One rifle I may be able to exceed that velocity but this is just a hobby rifle. I am looking forward to getting it.

It is a different gun than the one in the ad.

Do you think that the 250 grainAccubond would go through an elk?

I have some experience using the AccuBond bullets on either side of the 250 gr 9.3 mm, namely the 35 cal 225 and 375 cal 260 gr. I wouldn't say they would exit all the time since they open pretty wide but they penetrate more than far enough, you will have no worries with them. Congrats on the new gun, keep us posted.

Thanks Gerry, now I do not feel so cranky about selling the .340. The 287 gr Partition ought to through anything that I want to shoot even at these pedestrian velocities.

Fotis, pretty notable velocities at 70 KSI. However, I don't think that I want to go there with a bore this size.

This theoretical prediction run was set at 63000 PSI not 70. In layman's terms 2k PSI under 308 Win max.

Again theoretical.
As far as the 250 AB on elk? No doubt in my mind that it would perform admirably.

I would be happy for somone with the sofware to run a 53 KSI profile for that that gun. I do not know what that commutes to in handload data because everything is set at for about 45 KSI for the break action simgle shot European guns for that caliber not the lockup Number One guns like the Ruger. Mayby somebody could give me a 53000 PSI run for this rifle that would get me started on the road to reality? I would be indebted for that service, thank you.

Charlie,

Here are some powders you might consider:

Cartridge : 9.3 x 74 R
Bullet : .366, 286, Nosler PART SP 44750
Useable Case Capaci: 67.955 grain H2O = 4.412 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.720 inch = 94.49 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 51000 psi, or 351 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 110 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

Thanks DrMike for the data, I have quite a bit of IMR 7828 on hand. It appears that that powder will work fine for my needs. Howvever, you made a couple of recomendations and I must ask if you prefer MRP and Ramshot over IMR 7828 SSC?

Not particularly, Charlie. I do use quite a bit of VihtaVuori and Ramshot powders, however. I do like the VihtaVuori powders, and especially the double base powders. They have served me well. I will not, however, argue that they are superior to IMR.

I also have 4064 and 3031 both of which seem to give very high velocities with this case. I will just have to get out the chrono and go to work. Thanks for the data guys, although I don't think 70KSI in in the cards for this number One. However, 2450 fps is possible for the 279 grain bullet and that would be a great load for anything that I ever shoot and in a cartridge that is nearly 100 years old!

I am really stoked about this rifle and have not had a Number One Ruger for many years.
