Your "Best" Big Game Animal

2006 Sonora, MX. 7mmRM and 160 Nosler Partition. We were in the back of the old F150 in a high rack, a very common way to hunt down there so you can see over and into the dense brush. After a while of doing this, on opening morning, a big buck busted out of the brush and crossed the road in front of us. He quickly disappeared into the brush, nose down, searching for hot does. We hopped down out of the high rack, and Sergio, the eagle eyed guide, quickly got on his tracks an off we went. We hadn't gone particularly far, maybe 3/4 of a mile, when Sergio looked up quickly and pointed into the brush. I do not know Spanish, but he was obviously telling me the buck was in front of us a ways. I got directly behind him and looked down his pointing arm and finger much like you would look down your rifle barrel. About 150 yards in front of us, in some belly high brush, under an iron wood tree, and in the shade, stood a ginormous buck. Sergio was obviously telling me to shoot, so I got a rest off my knee and the buck dropped at the shot.

He is the buck of 10 lifetimes. In over 44 years of mule deer hunting I have never seen any buck approaching the size of this one. Deep forks, 22" backs, 27" beams, 35 1/4" wide outside, 30 1/2" inside spread on main beams, average mass........and I had a 214" gross typical mule deer buck. After the 60 day drying period he netted 205" as a typical, one of the largest typicals to ever come out of Sonora, MX, and he resided in the Top 100 B&C bucks of all time for a few years. Not sure what he is now, probably 110 or so if I were guessing. It doesn't matter though. I know how fortunate I was to be in the right place at the right time. I still think about it almost every day.

Wow! Just wow! That truly is the buck of a lifetime. Congratulations!

What a beauty! Love those big ole mexico bucks! One of my dreams is to hunt down there some day! Thanks for sharing your story!

Great mule deer.

Bruce, your story reminds me of a buck I shot one time. He kicked out of a drive and ran across a swamp. It was the first deer I ever shot on the run. Before the drive I remember an older guy saying, when you see the tip of the nose in the scope take the shot and they will jump into the shot. Well, this deer was closer than the lead I gave him. Shot #1 hit him in the bridge of the nose, #2 took his horns off and #3 hit him in the shoulder. As he was running, he was going away from me. After that day, I was able to take stands that the younger guys in the group never got to take. The older guys were very proud and on that day, I earned my stripes. I think I was 16 or 17 years old.

Haven't posted this one for a while....but it ranks up there with the top ones. In 2006 I was the guest of "Helluva hunt" in Douglas Wyo. This private and community supported event gives 12 people a year with physical impairments and vision loss an opportunity to take an antelope. Gary and Jane Stearns, their family, friends and the community of Douglas come together to make this happen. It also has the support of Jim Zumbo and Ron Coburn. It is a wonderful experience. I have lots of pics from the trip, but here is a link to my post shortly after the trip. CL

Awesome stories guys. Cloverleaf that is pretty wonderful what those folks do to help others and to give everyone a chance to hunt and enjoy being outdoors!

That Mexico mule deer is something else! WOW>

Troy, that is awesome that some hunters give back time and personal effort so that others may enjoy the sport. I'm aware of some sportsmen who give time and effort to include wounded vets in the sports of hunting and fishing. I'm unaware of such programs up here, other than on an individual basis. However, I am fully supportive of all such sharing.

Wow, good thread! Some great trophies and stories. This is my "best" trophy.

This buck commemorated my 50th. year of deer hunting in 2012, the only seasons I have missed were when I was out of the country working for Uncle Sam. I first went deer hunting with my dad at the ripe old age of 4, I didn't carry a gun that year but started 2 years later. The morning I shot this old guy was one of those perfect fall days, cold, still and clear with just a hint of breeze. I was hunting not far from where I had my first hunt so many years before. As I walked up to the deer a flood of emotion washed over me, this was the first deer I had taken after the passing of my father, the man who taught me all I know about deer hunting. Even after dad quit hunting he still enjoyed seeing my trophies and I always went by to show my mom & dad my game, whatever it was. While I had continued to hunt after we lost dad it just wasn't the same. Mom had remarried and moved back to her home town a couple of months earlier so I called her and gave her the news. The first thing she said was "your dad would be proud" then she asked when I was I going to come and fry her some tenderloin :) I'm sure I'll have more success in the fall woods but this will always be my best trophy, he got me excited about hunting again.

And a dandy deer he was, Bob. Great tribute to your dad. Thanks for sharing.

Well not a buck of a lifetime but a nice Mule Deer. The good news is I'm headed back to Montana again this fall. I have seen a Mule Deer of a Lifetime and watched him for around 30 minutes about 200-250 yds from me in Colorado west of Pagosa Springs, bad news is all I had was a Elk tag in my pocket. He was as big as any deer head I have seen in a Cabelas.
Well here is a my Mule Deer shot with a 6mm Rem.

And that is a fine looking deer. He'll do in most anyone's trophy room.

Probably this guy here. I call him the "pivot deer", I sat on a ladder rung of a center pivot for over 2 hours to get a chance at this buck. I even crawled down two towers to get closer to him. He was in weeds up to my shoulders. Finally he presented me a chest shot at 258 yards and I took it. Custom .280 Remington, 140gr TSX. Took a while to find him in the tall weeds and even had to drag him out of there to get a gut job done. 29.5" 4x5 and green scored right around 170

That is a good looking Mule deer . I bet you it was not a lot of fun dragging him out!!

Blessings,
Dan

Here's my Son's first Big Game Animal a Montana Antelope. This cost me, I told him if he shot one over 15 inches I would buy him a rifle of his own. I bought him a Remington 700 CDL 25-06 at the Mitchel SD Cabelas store on the ride home. He shot this with my Remington 700 6mm Rem.
