Problem is "scientific" is vague; you mean in the classic (observed) sense or the modern "algorithmic" sense?
Monos penetrate deeper largely because of their smaller frontal diameter relative to cup-n-cores. Mono's ability to open at extended ranges (after speeds have diminished) are highly...
Great pics guys; these are some of my best memories!
Whitetail season here in Michigan 2009:
Pronghorn 2010 in Newcastle, Wy w/ my (then) 8 yo son Samuel, and gunsmith/friend Mike McCabe & his son Kili
Michigan's youth hunt at my bud's cabin w/ my boys 2012
I have to say that I love...
Ray,
Welcome to the joys of deer hunting sir!
I have used a few different cartridge/bullet combos for deer and found them pretty darned easy to kill provided I put my projectile of choice in the right spot.
I've used both standard & premium bullets, and while I lean toward standard bullets...
I hardly clean my rifles at all anymore. I started out as a rather obsessive cleaner but go hundreds of rounds without nowadays, cleaning only when accuracy is visibly degraded.
I may swab the bore with a WD40-soaked patch after hunting in extremely wet conditions (I keep tape over muzzle to...
My son dropped 2 pigs in Tx w/ 90 gr NBTs launched from my 6-250 at a sedate 3k fps from <100 yds. They were both one-shot kills but the first (largest; 190-ish lbs) kicked enough to necessitate an insurance shot.
The initial 2 shots on each were pass-throughs (an amazing feat for these little...
Dang Scotty you're giving me an itch here!
This thing has some pretty serious cool factor... just enough extra space over 7RM for 7mm Weatherby numbers w/o all the extra pressure.
You guys are jackin me up; every time I figure I've finished my last build you call to my attention something 'new'!
Yep and in addition to taper don't forget the other thing those parent cartridges that benefit most from Improving have in common; relatively low SAAMI-approved operating pressures.
250-3000, 257 Rob, 280 Rem, and 300 H&H all have rather low max pressures mostly (280 is a mystery as to why)...
.280 AI & 7mm WSM have roughly equal powder capacity, so they'll perform similarly at similar pressures.
This is why they cannot be the equal of the 7 RM.
That having been said I love the uniqueness of my 257 AI (though I'd be afraid if I were getting 3400-ish w/ 110s; it should not perform...
Wow Scotty lookin good man; 160s @ 3200 is whisked for any big game on this continent! Use up those 90 rounds in <20 yrs and that'll amount to a couple decades living high on the hog meat-wise!
The load that did yeoman's work with whitetails for me when I first started loading was:
RP cases
150 cup-n-core
52 gr RL15
CCI-200
Now I've been waiting to knock something over with:
RP cases
130 TSX
56.5 gr RL15
Cci-200
and on my pronghorn for hunt this fall I'll likely run:
RP cases
150...
Have you fired it at least a hundred times?
If so I'd say it was broken in ;) !
In all seriousness, I have a couple foulers & am installing Ultra Bore Coat this winter. It's a polymer coating that is supposed to help quite a lot, allowing many shots before copper becomes an issue.
I'll report...
No doubt!!
I hunted 7 in '10, and took my son to 26 in '14, but am saving PPs for a red desert hunt.
This year a hunting pard & I are buying as many doe tags as we can and taking a long weekend to run out, fill as many as we can in a few days of hunting, and come home w/ a car full of meat...
Awesome!!
We get whitetails & turkeys in the windows behind the preacher, and they run by the windows of my (5th & 6th grade) Sunday Scool classroom rather regularly. My teaching pard likes to say, "there isn't anything like General revelation to get in the way of teaching kids about special!"...
Remchester it is; I've had great luck with it. Not as good as Nosler, Norma, or Lapua, but just as good as the big two, cheaper & more available especially when couples with Graf & Sons shipping!
