    I HATE load development.

Those are what I like to call "high class problems" ;) !!

    If H4350 doesn't work...

My first two choices after the 4350s would be RS-Hunter (I LOVE this stuff as much as many guys love H-4350) and RL-19. On the faster side I'd consider testing RL-15. I hate to tell you, but you may be best off trading out projectiles to 165/8 NBT or 165 Interlock. If yer 06 won't shoot a 165...

    Quick range trip :(

For your dad's rifle consider my experience: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27417 ...and if kiss'll function thru his rifle give it a try; you'd want to drop charges back a tad & work back up though. Has RL19 worked well through his rifle in the past? You might consider a slower powder like RL22 or...

Experience Fire Forming: Bullet Jam Sufficient?

I completely agree Steve. I always fire form before attempting load work-up, and have killed a bunch of stuff with fire forming loads. Never done the COW method because I like shooting just to shoot, but if I had a rifle for which I was concerned about wear I would certainly look into it...

Experience Fire Forming: Bullet Jam Sufficient?

RR, Thanks for the information. As indicated above, I am well aware of all you say. As indicated in my OP it does NOT appear to be chambered properly: Of the 23 rounds I had loaded only 5-6 went off; the rest were so loose in chamber that the primers wouldn't detonate! That means that either...

Experience Fire Forming: Bullet Jam Sufficient?

I loaded up a bunch of my 174 FMJs for a hard jam into the rifling (dang that's a long throat!!) and practiced offhand at clay pigeons between 50 & 70 yards this weekend. It was great fun and for the most part things worked out nicely. I did have 5 rounds that didn't go off (light primer...

Experience Fire Forming: Bullet Jam Sufficient?

Thanks guys. You are saying exactly what I meant when I said in my OP: That means that either my chamber is over spec or my virgin cases & 1x fired in at least 2 different rifles (2 different sources) are under spec. Ugh. I was being ironic; obviously virgin cases AND 1x from TWO different...

Experience Fire Forming: Bullet Jam Sufficient?

Thanks Scott. My 257 AI is a Mauser and I can feel a virgin case chamber... I mean it's tight. Never had this issue w/ that rifle. This is a different story. It's pretty clearly out of spec. Irritating, but hoping it's easier to remedy than forming 150 false shoulders! Thanks a lot, Efw

Experience Fire Forming: Bullet Jam Sufficient?

As many of you who visit the rifle board know, I just received my finished 280 AI. Yesterday I went to the range to work up a fire forming load. I had a few new RP-7mm Exp cases loaded w/ 174 FMJs & a few 1x that I thought had been chambering tightly (I admit to being a bit of a newbie when it...

    Win 70 PF 280 AI

No idea on the Nosler stuff but I heard so much about it possibly not fitting that I decided to save the expense & fireform. See where that got me... Thanks man I'm friggin GEEKED! Almost thinkin bout neckin down some Lake City 06 brass just to save the step. So danged lazy I know...

    Win 70 PF 280 AI

Yeah I gotta keep reminding myself of that... My 257 AI brass has lasted FOREVER, so 150 of these will hold me over for many, many yrs. This is just such a friggin PITA!!!

    Win 70 PF 280 AI

Fo sho; 270s were invented to be donors! Range report: I am so used to the feel of a tight case in a Mauser where tight is tight and you can feel it. I chambered EACH ONE of these 7mm Exp cases and thought they were tight enough to reliably fire form. With a spring-loaded ejector even loose...

    No Range Today

^That right there. I didn't realize this until I got my 2nd 06. The first one had a classic stock that did NOT fit me well; was REALLY short, and had one those really poor "pads" that offered NO protection from recoil whatsoever. It was my first "high powered" center fire" and beat the ever...

    Win 70 PF 280 AI

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. I'll let you know how she shoots as soon as I can! Chomping at the bit here to get out :) !! Taylorce1 he pulled the 06 tube, set back & rechambered to 280 AI, reblued the tube, and tweaked the trigger for $235 shipped. If I'd have left it to the rechamber I...

    Win 70 PF 280 AI

Winchester Model 70 PF Lightweight, TLWs & Burris FFII 3-9x 40mm BP 280 AI Was a 30-06 w/ funked-up tube, so I got a take-off from Chet here & had Dave @ IT&D rechamber. He also adjusted the trigger BEAUTIFULLY!! The only complaints I have are: -I don't like its abrupt fore end; the wood is...

MODEL 70 280 Remington BUILD HAS BEGUN

That's like telling yer son you had hoped she'd be a he when he brings home his beautiful bride to be. :? So wrong; 270s are created to be donors! :!:

MODEL 70 280 Remington BUILD HAS BEGUN

Great minds sir; great minds! I just picked up a PF M70 LW in 06 that had a badly pitted barrel. Chet hooked me up w/ a lovely take-off in .280 Rem which I sent down to Dave at IT&D and am expecting my new .280 AI sometime in the next couple of weeks! Whew ha! Good luck on the .280 Rem; on a...

    New build ideas

+1 If you're looking to replace the 270 a 280 AI is a great direction to go. Those other 2 sound nice but I love to shoot my rifles a fair bit and wouldn't those for reasons of powder burning, blast, and recoil. 6-06 would be awesome, too.
