Well I think I found a load for my 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70. Load consist of a Remington 300 gr JHP, 62.0 grs H322, W-W case and Federal GM210M primer.

I will reshoot the gun and clock the load with my Ohler 35 but I think this load is good to go.

Looks good.
I'm curious what velocity you'll get with the 300 gr. It's certainly an accurate load.
Good Shooting

Very nice!

I love my 45/70, it's in the Encore I can only imagine the joy of multiple shots with the big dawg.

Great shooting JD. I have a guide gun in a 450 and it really shoots too. It's amazing how accurate the lever guns can be. They are also very fun to shoot. Let us know your velocity.

The Nosler 300 gr PT with 62.0 grs H322, W-W case and Federal GM210M has a velocity of 2206 fps from the 1895 Guide. Shot into water filled milk jugs and recovered a bullet in jug #8.

Sounds like you have found the perfect hunting load.I have two guide rifles, and have had good accuracy with a 300 grain bullet and 50 grains of Rel 7.The velocity is around 2000 fps.

no pictures?

The .45/70 is one of my all time favorites.I have six rifles chamber for it.I like the Winchester 86 best of all.I have always been a sucker for the obsoletes.I love the .38/55.It was the .308 of the 19th century. My all time favorite is the .405 win. That is what I hunt with most of the time now.
Just remember only the newest high powered magnum will kill game.

Here is the recovered Nosler 300 gr PT shot from my 1895G 45-70. Avg MV is 2206 fps. Shot into water filled milk jugs at 100 yds, found in jug #8. Retained weight is 285.4 grs and expanded to .776" with one petal broken off.

That load equals the ballistics that Hornady shows for the .450 Marlin.I have some H322 and some Nosler partitions . I will try that load.Thanks.

.405

The 300 gr PT will out penetrate the Hornady, even if it has more weight.
I wish Nosler would not end production of this great bullet!

Nosler, how about keeping the 45-70 300 gr PT alive!

Darn ,they are going to discontinue it? I better locate some to buy.
I never liked the performance of the Hornady 300HP.I like the speer 400 grain pretty well.

Buy what you can, Nosler has quit making them!

They are about a buck a piece, but for hunting only ( 100 bullets) will probably last me the rest of my life.
Looks like I hit the jack pot, I was going back through my bullets and found that I have about 80 bullets. That should last me till I kick the bucket.
I just use them in my Marlins. I shoot cast bullets in my 86's.
