Our first 2022 bird hunt. No birds. No problem. :)

My youngest son and I headed over to a nearby canyon to seek out some quail. The quail eluded us, however we had a great walk with our dog and a couple of fine shotguns. John carried a very lightweight CZ side by side in 28 gauge. I used a nearly 100 year old Remington 32 12 gauge. Would have been great to get some shooting, but the only quail we found were on private property where we couldn't hunt.

I hunted birds often with my father. Nice that my son and I are carrying on that tradition, using my father's old shotguns. :)

BTW, saw a LOT of fresh bear sign along the creek. We may go back this evening and see if we can locate the bear.

We usually pick up some birds, but I kind of thought that we'd strike out Monday morning, after the weekend hunters hit it hard.

Regards, Guy

Looks to have been a great day. I'm certain each of you (even the dog) enjoyed the outing. Hope you find the bruin.

Well, I would love to post some pics of what the wife and I got, but I have none. She took a shot at a 4x4 muley but missed. I spent over 2 hours looking for it just in case. I took a shot at a spike elk but poor footing on a rock caused a miss when the rock rolled. I took another shot at a very nice bull elk but as I was kneeling using some dead fall as a gun rest for a spike elk when a noise off to my left pulled my attention away from the spike and a large bull appeared. I had to turn my upper body hard to the left while leaving my knees in the same position. I thought I had hit him, but no evidence of blood anywhere and using my 338RUM W/225ABs would surly exit at that distance. I searched in the dark for 2 hours that evening. I went back to camp then went down to the other hunters camped down from me that we had been talking with almost daily. They agreed to help search the next morning. Found nothing after 3 more hours of searching. My thought is, because I was twisted so much to the left that when I fired, and I was so focused on the shot placement that the recoil made me twist back into a more natural position.

My wife and I have had a great fall here in Wyoming.

Congratulations to you both, way to stack them up! You will be eating well for quite awhile. Nice mule deer, how wide is he?
