.222 Rem Range Day

I made it out to the range today to re-break in the 1954 Model 722 .222 Rem. Perfect day, overcast at 55 degrees and not a whisper of a breeze. I bought a new Vortex 4x-12x for the rifle and mounted it up and it just looked awful. That scope was totally out of place. I then remembered that I have an old Weaver V9 Widefield in the closet that hasn't seen the light of day for many years. I mounted it up and was completely satisfied. A forty year old scope on a 60 year old rifle.

I made up several loads using a 50 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, 50 gr V-Max, and a 40gr V-Max. I would of liked to try a 40gr Ballistic Tip but the pro shop didn't have any. Anyhow, I think I made a terrible mistake purchasing this rifle. Look at the results.

I really, really like reloading and shooting the .222 rem. I think I need to get a couple more. Maybe a heavy barrel something and a light little CZ. This might be a very costly choice I made.

I see the problem! Yes, it is one of the dangers of picking up another rifle. Still, that one does appear to deliver the goods. I recently restored my dad's old beaten up Sportco 222, found an almost impossible-to-find magazine for it and gave it back to him with some new loads I worked up for it. He was pretty pleased as it hadn't been used in 20 years!

What a great little cartridge.

I grew up shooting our family Rem. 722 in the 222 version. We reloaded 50 grain Hornady spire points using IMR 4198 powder. Think we were getting 3200 fps or so from it as it sported a 26" barrel. Killed many ground hogs with that gun. It would print 3-shots easily inside a dime and in the same hole many times as I remember too.

Love that cartridge as it brings up fond memories. :wink:

I have some alternative motives with this rifle. I think I've found my grandson's first deer rifle. Most of the deer around here are small and the .222 will do just fine. I've got a short action 700 ADL synthetic youth stock back in the closet. With a little work and a few parts I think I can make it fit.

Looks good. I have a 1970 era Win.Mod 70 varmit .222Rem and it likes RL-7 H4198,BLC-2 and the CFE223 is showing promise. Like those v-max and bts as well.

My daughter took her first buck with a 222 Remington and it worked very nicely. We have the same sorta small'ish deer. I treated it like an archery hunt keeping the shots close and waited for the good broadside shot and it hammered the buck with a 50 BT. If I was doing it again, I'd probably try the plain old 55 grain Hornady Spire Point. Supposed to be a tough little bullet.

^^^ Lots of guys seem to be using those 55 gr Hornady spire points and the results look great.

Try the 52gr Custom Comp, with H322 or Bench Mark.
You have a winner that hopefully ony shows more promis as you tweek its loads.

Very nice, I have two Remingtons of that age and they don't shoot nearly that well. A classic.
